2013 Message of the 20th Regular SOBOR of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA to Ukrainian Orthodox Christian Faithful

“Am I my brother’s keeper?”

“As we read through the pages of Scripture we begin to discover that there is a responsibility that we are entrusted with. Our Lord Jesus Christ … said if we clothed anyone who was naked, visited anyone in prison, even just gave a cup of cool water in His name then it would be as if we had done it directly to Him.… all these infer that we are in some sense our brother’s keeper, even as he or she is our keeper. In a culture that breathes and exhales independence, that’s soaked in capitalism more than “community-ism”, we tend not to want others keeping watch over our souls much less the added responsibility of us having to care for them. As much as we may resist the idea that we are our brother’s keeper, in God’s eyes we MUST be our brother’s keeper.”  - Metropolitan Antony, Address to the 20th Regular Sobor

Thus, lead by our hierarchs the delegates of the 20th Regular Sobor of the UOC of the USA have affirmed our need to be concerned with our brothers and sisters.  Taking care of our neighbor is the essence of the Law given us by our Lord, “Love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.” This awesome responsibility is encompassed by the concept of “stewardship”. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our Holy Church instructs us that at its basic this concept involves feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and tithing. Our love for God is expressed by putting the needs of others before our own. Keeping this in mind, we further express our love for God by supporting our Church through dedication of our time, talent and treasure.

We, the faithful of UOC of USA Church, are tightly woven into the tapestry of the American experience and we need to accept the challenge of, “Am I my brothers’ keeper,” by bringing the Church into the lives of our communities. We pray that the Lord enlightens us to open our eyes, and helps us commit our hearts and minds to the challenges and opportunities presented to help our brothers. In that spirit, the Sobor encourages each parish to become stewards of their community – for we are our brothers’ keeper.

The question, “Am I my brothers’ keeper?” requires each of us to be less concerned about ourselves and more open to the needs of others. We are encouraged to use unaccustomed ways to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need.  In this way, God’s love is manifested through our actions.

The hierarchs and, clergy and faithful gathered into the 20thRegular Sobor of the UOC of the USA accepts and cherishes with the love in which it was sent, the personal video greeting and benediction of His All-Holiness Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. In the same spirit we are grateful for the personal greeting and benediction of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios delivered by His Grace Bishop Sevastianos during our Sobor.  Ever mindful of His All Holiness’ concern for the spiritual integrity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ukraine during these complicated and trying times, we assure His All-Holiness of prayerful support as he navigates through the troubled waters, which delay the realization of a united local (Pomisna) Ukrainian Orthodox Church independent of any and all foreign intrusion and sovereign in its internal structure.

The clergy and faithful gathered into the 20th Regular Sobor of the UOC of the USA are comforted in the blessings and leadership of our Archpastors - His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, our prime hierarch, and His Grace Bishop Daniel, President of the Consistory - and profoundly thank them for their continued spiritual and temporal guidance, their labor of love for the good estate of the Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and for their prayers for the sanctification and salvation of her spiritual children. May our living loving Lord give them many more years of good health, peace and strength in their continued service in His Vineyard.
