Pre-Sobor Activities at the Spiritual Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in South Bound Brook, NJ!

The first two days of Pre-Sobor activities at the spiritual center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in South Bound Brook, NJ were full of constructive work and reflection on the ministry of the Church in her service to the flock of the 21st century.

On Monday, October 14, 2013, the feast of Protection of the Birth-Giver of God, the final meeting of Consistory of the UOC of the USA took place at the Metropolia Center, reviewing final preparations for the upcoming SOBOR of the Church.

On Tuesday morning, October 15, 2013, following a prayer service, Metropolitan Council of the Church met in a day long session at the Ukrainian Cultural Center of the Historical and Educational Complex of the Church, addressing the vital issues of Church life since the 19th Regular Sobor of 2010. Both hierarchs of the Church, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and His Grace Bishop Daniel, in addition to regular members of the Council took active part in the meeting discussions, addressing spiritual and administrative matters of the Church. The main governing body of the UOC of the USA, between Sobors, had a lot to address during its tenure, ranging from the nation’s economic meltdown and its impact on the Church’s finances to the construction of the Historical and Education Complex at the Metropolia Center. Among the topics of discussion were the crucial ministries of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, All Saints Camp and the publications of the Church, especially the “Ukrainian Orthodox Word” – the official publication of the Metropolia. Upon the request of the subscribers and in order to reduce the financial cost of production and mailing of the Church’s magazine, the Metropolitan Council decided to cease printing of the magazine; however, a digital monthly publication will be released to over 25,000 readers and subscribers.

On Wednesday, October 16, 2013, about 70 priests and deacons participated in a one-day Clergy Conference to reflect on their ministry in world that is challenged by the secular influences of the 21st century.  Metropolitan Antony welcomed the pastors of parishes to their spiritual center and called upon them to be strong as the world confronts them with spiritual and social hardship.  Bishop Daniel, Consistory President of the Church also addressed the clergy reflecting upon the blessing of pastoral ministry for our Church. In addition to addressing administrative issues, the clergy of the Church was treated to a lecture by Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Ugolnick, reflecting upon the ministry among the elderly of our society, especially the ministry in Nursing homes, hospice, hospitals, etc. Protopresbyter Taras Chubenko presented a document reflecting Federal and State regulations for pastors, regarding their responsibilities with the administration of the Holy Mystery of Marriage.

In addition, the hierarchs of the Church discussed the clergy the newly revised “Sexual Misconduct Policy” of the UOC of the USA that will be implemented throughout the entire Metropolia.

Moreover, the newly released SERVICE BOOK for clergy of the Church was presented and liturgical instructions were discussed and explained.

The one-day conference concluded with Vespers service served in Three Holy Hierarchs Chapel of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary.
