St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chester, PA Welcomes Bishop Daniel
By Christine K. Kurman

For the first time, on a beautiful sunny and warm Sunday, September 29th, 2013, the faithful of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chester, Pennsylvania, welcomed His Grace Bishop Daniel, the Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy and president of Consistory of UOC of the USA to their parish.  Bishop Daniel was greeted by the Very Reverend Gerald Ozlanski, Miss Christine K. Kurman, vice president of the parish’s board of administration,  presented the traditional korovaj and salt, and Mrs. Halyna Cichanowsky.

The morning started with His Grace Bishop Daniel celebrating the Divine Liturgy along with Father Jerry.  Assisting Bishop Daniel and Father Jerry were seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary (South Bound Brook, NJ): Fr. Vasyl Dmytryshyn, Subdeacon Adrian Mazur, Seminarians Volodymyr Sukanets Jr. and Eduardo Goncalves along with the parish’s altar server Jason Ludlow.  The parish choir,  which is under the direction of Christine K. Kurman, chanted the responses during the Liturgy.

After the Divine Liturgy there was a catered brunch sponsored by the parish that was enjoyed by all.  Bishop Daniel spoke about the outstanding work taking place in the UOC of the USA’s sponsored orphanages in Ukraine.  He also talked about the needs of the children and young adults who were living in the orphanages.  At first, the children living in the orphanage were basically confined to their beds.  The staff in Ukraine only had moments to tend to the children.  Now, with the help of the faithful and those young adults from the United States and the high school and college students - the children are encouraged and love the visits.  Bishop Daniel also brought many photographs of the children along with cross stitch pieces and various art projects done by the children, which were shared with the members of the parish.

St. Mary’s truly enjoyed the Bishop’s visit and asks Almighty God to continue blessing the Bishop and all those who travel with him to the orphanages and continue the wonderful work of Christ.
