65th Annual Ukrainian Orthodox League Convention Convenes in Allentown, PA

The Junior and Senior UOL Chapters of the Protection of the Birth-Giver of God Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Allentown, PA have worked tirelessly over the last two years preparing for this memorable week of faith, fellowship and most of all, fun. That preparation is evident as the events of the first two days have been thoughtfully conceived and flawlessly executed.

The lobby of the Best Western has been turned into a veritable winter wonderland, as countless trees have been decorated as though it's December rather than a very warm week in July.

After Evening Prayers led by Rev. Fr. Paisius McGrath and a reflection offered by Very Rev. Fr. Steven Repa, Convention guests gathered for a Hospitality Night at the hotel.

The first full day of the Convention started on Thursday with a prayerful and beautiful Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Antony, Locum Tenens of the UOC of the USA Metropolia and other clergy. The Business Sessions commenced with a solemn singing of Memory Eternal for our beloved Metropolitan Constantine of blessed repose, who lent support, guidance and love for the League throughout his earthly ministry.

After opening remarks, the Junior Convention body adjourned to their own conference room to begin their deliberations. Most of the day's Senior Sessions was spent in committees, starting the work that will be presented to the entire Convention body beginning on Friday.

His Eminence Archbishop Antony offered remarks to the Senior Convention body, reflecting on the ministry of the Church’s largest organization. The Archbishop reflected upon the numerous accomplishments of the UOL; yet, challenged the delegates of the Convention to offer even more of their service to the Church in the times of spiritual, social and economic uncertainties.

Before the conclusion of the business day, Senior UOL President Martha Misko presented Archbishop Antony and His Grace Bishop Daniel with checks to benefit St. Andrew's Society (in the amount of $4,045) and the UOC of the USA (in the amount of $2,000). These monies were raised by the “Souper Bowl” Sunday initiative and Thanksgiving Tithing program.

This busy day concluded with the “Christmas in July” evening at the nearby Meadows in Hellertown. The hall was decorated with all types of holiday cheer, including lights, stockings, ornaments and other assorted bric-a-brac. Guests were encouraged to wear their best holiday attire, which many people did gleefully. Our hierarchs even got into the holiday spirit by intoning for “God Eternal” when blessing the meal.
