The Ukrainian Orthodox parish of St. Vladimir in Ambridge, PA, experienced a momentous occasion during the third week of Great Lent as Archbishop Daniel joined them for the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts. Led by the Very Rev. Fr. Michael Kochis, the pastor of the parish, the congregation warmly welcomed Archbishop Daniel, who delivered a stirring sermon on the theme of spiritual accountability.
In his sermon, Vladyka Daniel drew inspiration from the profound words of St. Ephrem the Syrian, emphasizing the importance of spiritual healing and striving for perfection in both personal and communal aspects of life. His message resonated deeply with the parishioners, reminding them of their responsibility to minister the Word of God with authenticity and compassion in their communities.
Archbishop Daniel stated: “…As the Lenten season unfolds, marked by fasting, prayer, and reflection, the third week emerges as a pivotal point in our spiritual journey towards Pascha – the celebration of Christ's Resurrection. This mid-season period serves as a reminder of the transformative power of Lent, urging us to reevaluate our commitment to repentance, renewal, and spiritual growth.
During this week, we are called to deepen our engagement with the spiritual Lenten disciplines, intensifying their focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a time for introspection, as we confront our weaknesses and shortcomings, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation with God and our fellow brethren in the Lord.
We are reminded of the importance of perseverance and endurance in the face of temptation and spiritual struggle. Like Christ's forty days in the wilderness, we too are called to withstand the trials and tribulations of life, relying on the strength of our faith and the grace of God to sustain us.
In the midst of our Lenten observance, the third week serves as a beacon of light, guiding us through the darkness of our own spiritual struggles towards the joyous promise of Pascha (Easter) morning. It is a time of reawakening, as we recommit ourselves to the path of discipleship and embrace the transformative power of God's love and mercy.
As we journey through the third week of Great Lent, let us be mindful of the sacred significance of this season. Let us rededicate ourselves to the Lenten disciplines, seeking to purify our hearts, minds, and souls in preparation for the glorious feast of Pascha. May our Lenten pilgrimage lead us ever closer to the radiant dawn of Christ's Resurrection, where we will be renewed, restored, and reborn in His love.”
Throughout the liturgy, Deacon Evan O’Neil and Deacon Roman Marchyshak assisted the archbishop in the celebration of the sacred moment of the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts.
Adding to the reverence of the occasion, seminarians from St. Sophia Seminary assisted in the altar, enriching the liturgical experience with their dedication and enthusiasm. The entire congregation participated fervently, chanting the responses with devotion and unity.
Following the service, a luncheon was held in honor of Archbishop Daniel and the seminarians, providing an opportunity for fellowship and camaraderie among the parishioners. The event served as a testament to the vibrant spirit of community within the parish, where every member is valued and cherished.
The celebration of the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts with Archbishop Daniel at the Ukrainian Orthodox parish of St. Vladimir in Ambridge, PA, was a deeply enriching and spiritually uplifting experience for all involved. It reaffirmed the parish's commitment to its faith and heritage, while also inspiring a renewed dedication to spiritual growth and service to others. As the Lenten season progresses, the parishioners carry with them the lessons learned and the blessings received, continuing their journey towards spiritual enlightenment and communal harmony.
