В неділю, 27 серпня, у 32-гу річницю Української Незалежності всі ми разом молитовно вшанували пам’ять полеглих воїнів України під час богослужіння в Українській Православній церкві-пам’ятнику Св. Андрія Первозваного в духовному осередку США. Коли вірні прибули на Божественну Літургію, вони на мить зупинялися на вершині сходів, щоб розглянути численні банери, які покривали газон. Церкву-пам'ятник огорнула Алея Героїв, еліти української нації - 432 фотографії з надписом: “ Ми пам’ятаємо полеглих захисників”. Кожен з нас повинен усвідомити, що вони пішли захищати Україну за покликанням своєї душі й свого серця. Більшість з них не сказали «Мамо, до зустрічі», «Дружино, я тебе дуже люблю», «Синочку, доню, я повернуся». А війна продовжується. Вони стали нашим справжнім щитом. Тому ми з честю їх вшанували.

У співслужінні Високопреосвященнішого Митрополита Антонія, Первоієрарха Української Православної Церкви США та Діаспори, Високопреосвященніший Архієпископ Даниїл, Правлячий Архієрей Західної Єпархії, відслужив Архіпастирське Богослужіння. На Літургії також був присутній священичий клір церкви-пам’ятника, та студенти Свято-Софіївської Семінарії. Вірні, багато з яких були одягнені у традиційні українські вишиванки, уважно слухали, як Його Високопреосвященство вийшов, щоб прочитати Євангеліє від Матвія 19:16-26, у якому розповідається про зустріч Ісуса з молодим багачем. Поклавши Євангеліє на престол, Владика виголосив свою проповідь, у якій попросив, щоб, відзначаючи 32-шу річницю Незалежності України, усі відкрили свої серця та розум і щиро, на колінах і з упокореним серцем благали Господа, щоб Він вислухав наші щирі благання, прийшов нам на допомогу, і заступився за нашу Батьківщину, даруючи знову нашому народу перемогу та волю. Повернувшись до вівтаря, Його Високопреосвященство продовжив Літургію, а вірні, роздумуючи про сказані слова, звели свої очі до неба в тихій молитві, та ангельські голоси хористів піднесли ті молитви до неба.

На завершення Божественної Літургії Його Високопреосвященство освятив ікони, Запрестольний Хрест, Рипіди, та інше церковне начиння, окропивши усіх вірних Святою водою. Скориставшись нагодою, Владика вручив нагороду за служіння Українському Народу через місію УПЦ США для Генерального консула України в Нью-Йорку вельмишановного Олексія Голубова. А ще Владика нагородив сертифікатами про участь в

Національному конкурсі писемності Української Православної Ліги УПЦ США, дітей Української Православної церкви-пам’ятника Св. Андрія Первозваного в духовному осередку Митрополії Церкви – Якова та Емілію Пасакас. Наприкінці, усією церковною родиною привітали із Днем Народження декана семінарійного життя студентів Свято-Софіївської Семінарії – отця протоієрея Василя Пасакаса.

Тоді, Його Високопреосвященство зробив паузу та попросив усіх присутніх залишитися біля сходів храму, щоби вшанували пам’ять полеглих воїнів під час Панахиди. Для того, щоб увіковічнити пам’ять про них, про їхні подвиги біля церкви-пам’ятника була освячена Алея Героїв, щоби кожен перехожий зупинився, та подивившись в обличчя воїнів побачив, якою дорогою ціною зберігається спокійне життя у нашій Україні. Коли голос Його Високопреосвященства лунав від високих сходів церкви, і нісся вітерцем над цвинтарем, де спочивали покоління українців, він розповів історію про маленьку дівчинку, життя якої забрала ворожа ракета. Саме за цю дівчинку і за тисячі інших дітей наші воїни віддали свої життя. Ми шануємо і молимося за кожного полеглого захисника і захисницю – для нас всі вони є новітніми ГЕРОЯМИ незалежно від того, чи присвоєне їм відповідне офіційне звання. Всі вони мають велику пошану і подяку від нас. Про їхній подвиг ми не маємо права забувати, маємо пам’ятати, молитися, підтримувати їхні родини, адже наші герої полягли за право жити у своїй, вільній, незалежній та демократичній країні. І ми повинні втілити ці мрії в життя. Ми віримо, що так і буде після нашої перемоги, коли в Україні запанує справедливий мир. Світла пам’ять тим, хто віддав своє життя заради України і заради нашого спільного майбутнього. Нехай Господь упокоїть їхні душі у Царстві Небесному. Вічна їм пам’ять!

The sun rose brightly on Sunday August 27^th.  As the people arrived for Divine Liturgy, they noticed that the main drive to the St. Andrew Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, NJ, was flanked by numerous banners with images of men and women.  Smiling faces.  Serious faces.  Portraits and selfies.  Pausing for a quick look before climbing the steps to the church the faithful read the text on the banners identifying the individuals depicted as having given their lives defending Ukraine against the current genocide being perpetrated against their homeland of Ukraine by the Russian Federations.  

On this day the faithful at the Metropolia Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church gathered to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Ukrainian Independence and pray for her continued freedom and deliverance from her enemies. Viewing the alley of banners from the top of the steps of the church, the people’s smiles faded as they read, “We remember the fallen defenders”.  Their eyes spanned over the 432 images from afar, and with tears shining in their eyes they opened the door and entered God’s House, searching for solace for their troubled souls and heavy hearts. 

With His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the West Eparchy and Consistory President served the Divine Liturgy, along with the gathered clergy of the Church, the Seminarians from the Saint Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, and the faithful who arrived dressed in vibrant traditional Ukrainian attire. More tears were shed as Archbishop Daniel delivered a sermon based on the Gospel of Matthew, emphasizing the importance of opening their hearts and minds in prayer for Ukraine's victory and freedom.  The Lord is with us, and He is with them, and He hears all our supplications.  Therefore, we need not sit by and worry, spend hours waiting for news, or sit back and simply await whatever results occur from the war.  As Orthodox Christians, we are called to prayer.  As one we need to unite our hearts and souls, our very thoughts, and prayers, and humbly before God, beg for his intercession, His intervention, His attention to the current plight of Ukraine and her people.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel blessed numerous items to be used during future services in the church – icons, a Cross, Altar fans, and other items to be utilized in the Altar.  Having blessed the instruments of prayer, His Eminence turned to the faithful gathered behind him and sprinkled them with holy water, for they too are instruments of God.

For special service, the Church awards certain individuals with awards for servicer.  This day, an award was bestowed upon the Honorable Oleksii Holubov for his service to the Ukrainian people through the Missionary and Humanitarian work of the UOC of the USA.

Turning to two young children, Archbishop Daniel bestowed certificates of achievement to Alter Server Jacob and his sister Amelia Pasakas for their participation in a nationwide writing competition sponsored by the Ukrainian Orthodox League.  As the children’s father glowed with pride over his children’s success, everyone’s attention turned to him as he was greeted by the hierarch on his birthday.  The Seminarians began singing Mnohaya Lita to the Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, the Dean of the Seminary, as everyone joined in and joyously wished him many years of God’s blessings.

Before dismissing the faithful, Archbishop Daniel asked them to pause at the steps of the church for a moment, to participate in the blessing of the banners and pray for the peaceful repose of the soldiers, the warriors and heroes depicted on them.

As the people congregated at the foot of the church, His Eminence served a Memorial Service and then walked among the countless banners, sprinkling them with holy water, and loudly praying for their eternal souls.  His voice echoed solemnly through the plaza, reverberating over the Memorial Church, and gliding every more quietly over the graves of those who were buried in the vast cemetery beyond.  May all those who laid down their lives in defense of freedom, in defense of their nation, in defense of their loved ones, and in defense of their neighbors be remembered by the Lord in His Kingdom.

Addressing the faithful Archbishop Daniel asked that they all remember in their prayers the souls of those who have lost their lives in this unjust war and pray for the families that grieve their passing and try to figure out how to live their lives without their loved ones next to them.  His Eminence shared the story of a young girl who was killed by an enemy missile.  It is for these innocent children that these brave men and women laid down their lives.  They valiantly fought to protect the innocent lives of civilians, young and old.  They all have earned the title of “hero” for so bravely standing up in the face of evil and defending the innocent. 

As he concluded His Eminence asked that everyone remember, pray for, and support the families of the fallen soldiers, as well as to continue to work towards the realization of a free and independent Ukrainian nation for which these heroes fought. Looking towards heaven he expressed his undying hope for a just peace to reign in Ukraine and for the souls of the fallen soldiers to rest in the Kingdom of Heaven.  Memory Eternal!
