Ukrainian Orthodox Community of Berlin, Germany Prays for Ukraine and Celebrates the Spiritual Legacy of All Saints of Ukraine Sunday

On the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost, when the Church celebrates all the Saints of Ukraine, a historic event took place in the Ukrainian Community in Berlin.  For the first time since the WWII and the Soviet occupation, that a hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora served in the capital city of Germany.

At the invitation of the St. Ihor of Chernihiv Ukrainian Orthodox Parish, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the UOC of the USA, and Consistory President, served Divine Liturgy with the Ukrainians who now live in Berlin.

For many years Archbishop Daniel has been instrumental in ministering to Ukrainians in the Diaspora, ensuring their spiritual needs are met, establishing parishes, and ensuring that they receive whatever aid they require.

On this day, the Divine Liturgy served at the St. Thomas church in Berlin, united the Ukrainian Orthodox community in Germany with those around the world.  The UOC of the USA and Diaspora, as an integral part of  the Ecumenical Patriarchate, ministers to and serves all the Ukrainian Orthodox population outside the borders of Ukraine, and on this day the Ukrainians in Germany felt the love and warmth that only be felt as the member of a larger body.

The Ukrainian Community has graciously been permitted to utilize the St. Thomas Church for regular church services by the Protestant Bishop of Berlin.  The church was originally completed in 1869 and was built in the shape of a cross, with two towers and a high central dome.  At the time of construction, it was the largest church in Berlin with over 3,000 seats.  Suffering damage during WWII in 1942, it was reconstructed in 1963, with the exterior retaining the original design, and the interior being modernized.

As His Eminence arrived and entered through the doors of the historic church, he was greeted by Ms. Lyudmila Mlosh, head of the Central Union of Ukrainians in Germany, who presented him with a large round loaf of bread (korovai) per an ancient Ukrainian custom of greeting guests with bread and salt.  Stepping into the nave of the church, Protopresbyter Oleh Kovalenko, this particular Ukrainian community’s priest, who offered him the blessing cross, which Archbishop Daniel accepted, venerated, and blessed those present with.

As he entered the nave, in addition to the large congregation of faithful, His Eminence was joined by numerous clergy who serve in Germany including Fr. Alexander Smoktunowicz, Secretary of the Diocese, along with Fr. Roman Sadovy (Bad Kissingen), Fr. Ioan Kuz (Kiel).

Prior to the start of the Divine Liturgy, with the Blessing of Metropolitan Antony, Archbishop Daniel tonsured a new Reader into the Church, Artur Komarovskyj.  A Reader is a clerical order to which a man is tonsured and ordained, setting him apart as blessed by the bishop to read during church services and the Divine Liturgy.

The Liturgy, served by His Eminence, flowed on angels’ wings accompanied by the church choir under the directorship of Dobrodijka Olya Vodyanitska.  After the reading of the Apostle by parishioner Vadym Rudeichuk, Archbishop Daniel read the Gospel after which he delivered a moving sermon.  The Gospel spoke of how the Lord called the First Apostles to be “Fishers of Men.”  His Eminence stated that we all share the same calling and are all given the responsibility of sharing the Word of God with the world around us, whether we are in Ukraine, Germany, or the United States.  Wherever in the world we are, we all share the same responsibility as Orthodox Christians, to love our neighbors, which not only directs us to good works in assisting them physically, but also to aid them spiritually.

The service continued with numerous prayers and requests raised before the Lord for a cessation of the hostility and terror in Ukraine, and a return to peace, allowing the people to live in peace and prosperity as Ukrainians in their homeland of Ukraine.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel expressed his joy at being with the Ukrainian faithful in Germany as they celebrate their first Feast Day in Berlin.  He gifted everyone with a memorable icon and assured them of his continued prayers not only for Ukraine, but Ukrainians throughout the world.

In gratitude for his support of the Ukrainian community in Berlin, and for permitting the use of his parish church, St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Archbishop Daniel turned to Pastor Ermano Meichsner and gifted him a pectoral cross to wear as a remembrance of this historic day.

Having glorified the Lord and asked for His assistance, the faithful continued the afternoon in joyful camaraderie as they gathered for a delicious luncheon in the parish hall.  The remainder of the day was spent in warm conversation as the faithful spoke of historic events and made plans for the future.

Having concluded the day in prayer and sung a resounding rendition of the National Anthem of Ukraine, the faithful began to disperse to their homes.  As they walked away in various directions, they remembered that they were blessed with the responsibility of not only representing Ukraine to the world, but, to bring Orthodoxy to the world.

May the Lord bless the Ukrainian Orthodox Community in Berlin Germany and grant them many peaceful, healthy, and blessed years.
