Ukrainian Community of Metropolitan NY Area Commemorated HOLODOMOR Anniversary
Ukrainian Community of Metropolitan NY Area Commemorated HOLODOMOR Anniversary

On the chilly Saturday afternoon of November 27th, the cavernous interior of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City slowly filled with people who had come to pray for and commemorate the tragedy of the Holodomor genocide perpetrated against the Ukrainian people in 1932-33.

Those gathered inside the cathedral quieted as the choir members, dressed in black, with a splash of white, entered and took their positions at the front of the nave.  The Ukrainian Chorus “Dumka”, under the direction of Maestro Vasyl Hrechynsky since 1991, has continuously preserved and cultivated the rich musical heritage of Ukraine.

The bells hanging off ecclesiastic vestments jingled softly as the hierarchs and clergy of representative Churches entered as the choir solemnly sang “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal One, have mercy upon us.”

His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora, stepped up to the podium and spoke from the heart touching all those who listened inside the cathedral and over the live transmission throughout the world.

His Eminence stated that throughout the history of Mankind, we have witness countless numbers of human leaders who have declared themselves divine, masters of all, and believed themselves to have power of life and death.  Throughout all the epics of history we find leaders so consumed with themselves that the life of any other human being was viewed as inconsequential and expendable, holding no real value.

Episode after episode of genocide on a grand scale was perpetrated simply to eliminate one group, one ethnicity, one nation of people, for the satisfaction of the sick minds of men who considered themselves superior to anyone else upon the earth.

Today we gather to commemorate the 89th year of the repose of 10 million people who suffered in 1932-33 at the hands of one such person – Joseph Stalin.  He was so demented in his leadership and understanding that when his own government members dared to disagree with him they simply disappeared.

He was outraged that the Ukrainians dared to declare themselves to be a separate nation with a unique identity.  He demanded that his government put an end to it.  First all the members of the Intelligentsia were wiped out, and then they worked at destroying the rest of the populace, going from village to village confiscating all edibles, and every grain of wheat, leaving the villagers to starve to death.

His Eminence paused, looked around at the congregation, and into the camera, and asked that we all take a moment to reflect upon what it means to starve to death.  It is not a quick process.  It is a lingering, drawn-out suffering.  Family and loved ones would watch helplessly as their children, parents, grandparents wasted away, unable to help them.   Then there were those who suffered alone, with only God for comfort.  Others fell by the wayside, upon the streets, on the sidewalks, with nobody around to pick them up, or to bury them.   There was such devastation that there were too few able-bodied individuals to bury all the dead, so they were unceremoniously buried in mass graves, with no tears of parting, no prayers, no ceremony whatsoever.

These were people just like you and me, stated Metropolian Antony,  people who lived their lives not comprehending that something like this could possible happen to them.  Celebrating their feast days, their birthdays, until artificial death was forced upon them.

We commemorate all who perished, and as we just celebrated thanksgiving, and enter upon the Nativity Fast, Vladyka Antony asked that everyone please contemplate the feelings that must have been prominent in every single home of the nation at that time.  He asked that we pray fervently, in our homes, in our family of churches, together seeking the Lord’s blessing upon, and reception of those who perished unjustly.

We can never forget, this or any other genocide that has occurred throughout history.  We say we cannot and will not ever forget, and when we walk out of the church, back to our daily lives, and we forget…until next year. This time, let us not forget, but remember those millions and pray for them, and all those who are in power that no such tragedy reoccur in the history of the planet.

The demographers say that if those 10 million had not died, Ukraine’s population today would be over 100 million, instead of around 40 million.  The impact is massive.  Therefore, take these prayers to heart and remember those people frequently.  If members of your families perished, pray for them daily.  Be assured that your and our prayers comfort them and assure them that they did not die in vain.

His Eminence continued, by stating that beneath all that murder and death, they were still unable to kill the Ukrainian spirit.  They were unable to wipe out the Ukrainian nation, because underneath all that suffering was the self-identity that nobody can kill.  Join us in these prayers today, he stated, and may we all remember each day those who suffered so horribly.

As His Eminence left the podium and returned to stand before the Altar, the choir began to sing solemnly.

Having prayed for the peaceful repose of all the innocent victims of the murder by starvation, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the UOC of USA’s voice echoed up to the rafters as he soulfully proclaimed, “Christ our true God, Who has power over the living and the dead, through the prayers of His immaculate Mother; of the holy, glorious and all-praiseworthy apostles; of our venerable and godly fathers, and of all the saints, will place the soul of His servants, (N.), which has departed from us, in the abode of the just, and will give him rest in the bosom of Abraham, and number him among the just, and will have mercy on us, for He is good and loves mankind.”

With the singing of Vichnaya Pamyat, Memory Eternal, the Memorial Service concluded. Andrij Dobriansky of the Ukrainian Congress Committee, and Chairman of the Committee of United Nations Affairs for the Ukrainian World Congress, stepped up to the podium.  He greeted the hierarchs and clergy, and thanked all those who had joined them for this moving commemoration.

He stated that today, in Ukraine and in over 70 countries worldwide, people have gathered to remember the tragedy of the Holodomor, one of the most tragic examples of Man being evil against his fellow Man.   Unfortunately, as we approach the 90thyear of commemoration, we are still unaware of the fullness of the ramifications that occurred.  The victims of genocide are innocent victims and are therefore to always be remembered with dignity.

Mr. Dobriansky thanked the National Women’s League of America, who were one of the first to march and demonstrate before the White House to bring attention and awareness to the genocide, as well as the Ukrainian American Veterans, various dignitaries from the Ukrainian government, as well as the Crimean Tartar Community, all who have gathered to remember this tragedy.

He thanked Metropolitan Antony for his opening address, then read a brief message from Senator Charles Schumer, who sent his regrets for not personally attending the service, as he was mourning the recent death of his own father.  The senator spoke of the responsibility we have for our loved ones, and that we must all work at brining peace to the world.

President Joseph Biden also submitted a message to be read on his behalf, stating his sadness that such evil was perpetrated against the Ukrainian people, and ensuring that all efforts are being made to safeguard against such tragedies being perpetrated in the world today.

Her Excellency Oksana Markarova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States, stepped up to the podium, and read a message from the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed his gratitude for all who gathered this day to remember such a tragic event.  He stated that we are all united in remembering the memory of all those Ukrainians who died due to Holodomor.  This tragedy has sadly become a part of our history, and yet it is a catastrophe for all mankind.  Today we better understand how to safeguard against totalitarian regimes, and we will always remember and educate the world about genocide.  He thanked the United States for their ongoing support of Ukraine and for honoring the memory of the victims of the Holodomor.

Having read the message from the Mr. Zelensky, Ms. Markarova stated that as a child she was baffled by the reverence given by the Ukrainian people to bread.  You prayed when you baked it, you never ever through it out, if it fell upon the ground, you were to pick it up and kiss it.  Only as an adult, realizing the horrors the previous generations had to endure, did she understand the importance given to a piece of bread.  She continued, that while this horror occurred 89 years ago, it continues today, as Ukraine is in her 8th year fighting Russian aggression, fighting for sovereignty.  She also thanked everyone for uniting in memory, and for continuing to assist Ukraine today in her fight for independence.

Mr. Dobriansky returned to the podium and thanked Ms. Markarova for her moving words.  He continued by telling everyone that they can visit the website, ukrainegenocide.com for a wide variety of materials on the Holodomor.  It is an invaluable resource on the genocide.

How does one exactly define genocide?  Mr. Dobriansky referred to Dr. Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term “genocide”.

“By ‘genocide’ we mean the destruction of a nation or of an ethnic group. This new word, coined by the author to denote an old practice in its modern development, is made from the ancient Greek word genos (race, tribe) and the Latin cide (killing)…. Generally speaking, genocide does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation, except when accomplished by mass killings of all members of a nation. It is intended rather to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves. Genocide is directed against the national group as an entity, and the actions involved are directed against individuals, not in their individual capacity, but as members of the national group”

Next Mr. Dobriansky invited Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya to the podium. Sergiy Kyslytsya serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine, and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations.  Amassador Kyslytsya stated that it is with gratitude to the Lord that we gather today to commemorate one of the most tragic pages of the 20th Century, in such a magnificent cathedral.  He stated that if we say we are sinless we deceive ourselves.  It pains him to watch the same evil of yesterday, continue unabated today, as Russia continues her aggression against the people of Ukraine.  As Christians, we are told to forgive one another, however, this forgiveness does not include aggressors who deal with impunity against the innocent.  The Lord states that he will overthrow the thrones of rules, and will punish the tyrants for their aggression, arrogance and hautiness.  The ambassador stated that it is with this in mind, that we join today to light candles and remember the millions who lost their lives to just such tyrants.

Returning to the podium Mr. Dobriansky invited everyone to join next year’s commemoration on November 19th, marking the 90th anniversary of Holodomor.  He thanked all those who had joined this commemoration, especially Metropolitan Antony for his opening address, and Archbishop Daniel, both of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, Bishop Paul Chomnycky Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford, Oleksii Holubov, Consul General of Ukraine in New York, as well as the Dumka Chorus, with Maestro Vasyl Hrechynsky.  With this he introduced the day’s final speaker, the Most Reverend Archbishop Borys Gudziak, the current Archeparch of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia.

Stepping up to the podium Archbishop Boris thanked Cardinal Dolan for his hospitality and the use of the magnificent cathedral.  He stated that the memory of the Holodomor is both inspiring and humiliating.  We see how in the past there have been attempts to crush us into the earth, and yet our people and our Churches live on.  God gave us life, and commanded that “Thou shalt not kill.”  “President Putin, stop the killing!” he demanded.  Do not kill.  Do not get in line with all those who massacre.  Do not add to this history of death!  The Archbishop asked that the Lord keep our people safe, keep the world safe, and give wisdom so we all use our freedom wisely, allowing infants to be born, children to grow, adults to live in peace.

The ceremony concluded with the choir singing, God is Great: Prayer for Ukraine (Боже Великий).

Lord, oh the Great and Almighty,

Protect our beloved Ukraine,

Bless her with freedom

and light
 Of your holy rays.

With learning and knowledge enlighten

Us, your children small,

In love pure and everlasting

Let us, oh Lord, grow.

We pray, oh Lord Almighty,

Protect our beloved Ukraine,

Grant our people and country

All your kindness and grace.

Bless us with freedom, bless us with wisdom,

Guide into kind world,

Bless us, oh Lord, with good fortune

Forever and evermore.

The choir sang an additional solemn hymn, with deep and reverent undertones, as the hierarchs and clergy exited the cathedral, and the faithful stood in deep retrospection, contemplating the immense tragedy they had just commemorated.  As the final notes faded, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony stepped up to the Choir Director expressing his gratitude at the beautifully sung service.  He thanked the choir, and blessed them before also exiting the cathedral.

Outside the overcast sky hung low, as freezing drizzle slowly fell from the dark clouds, as nature wept for the evil humanity perpetrated.  With heads bowed low, huddled in scarves and dark hoods, the faithful slowly walked out of the cathedral, carrying with them a candle, and the memory of the tragedy, and conviction to not only pray for the victims, but, to work that there should be no future victims of mankind’s greed.  Memory Eternal to all those who lost their lives to the Holodomor.

Vichna Pamyat!
