Remembering the Archpastor: 25th Anniversary of Repose of Patriarch Mstyslav
Remembering the Archpastor

"Let us not forget our forefathers. Let us not conceal them from our youth. Let us call to remembrance, time after time, their glory and not be ashamed of it - for it is our glory also. Let us enter the future in wisdom, armed with the knowledge of our forefathers. We have no future if we downplay the past. In that past we had many wise men who were like prophets, who loved Ukraine as they loved God, mother and father." (Testament and Blessing of His Holiness Patriarch MYSTYSLAV I)

This year, on 11 June 2018, the worldwide Ukrainian Orthodox community marks the 25th anniversary of repose of Patriarch Mstyslav – a Bishop, metropolitan and in his later years of life – the first Patriarch of the reborn Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

The entire Ukrainian community throughout the world holds patriarch Mstyslav in high esteem. It was through his leadership that many people returned to the Church in the early Post-Soviet era Ukraine. People listening to his sermons often recorded them, because his ideas and concepts were extremely penetrating, teaching people what they should do as fellow humans and citizens of a great nation.

All those fortunate enough to have met with Patriarch Mstyslav of Kyiv and All Rus’-Ukraine are still amazed at his unending optimism and charisma. We Ukrainian Orthodox Christians of the 21st century continue to live the legacy of the late Metropolitan and Patriarch, who dedicated his life to the establishment of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in an independent country – our ancestral homeland Ukraine. Our forefathers laid down their lives so that the voice of millions of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians could be heard in equality with those of other nations, and their prayers offered for the peace and stability of the world and their nations and so that they could not be forbidden to pray in the language of their forefathers!

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church on this North American continent has been blessed by generations of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians who continue to pray in the language of their forefathers and yet open their doors and hearts to all who enter our temples. Here in United States of America we have been blessed to live with, benefitted from the fruits Partiarch Mstyslav’s labor in traveling around the world, including to the Mother Church of Constantinople, seeking the establishment and recognition of the united Ukrainian Orthodox Church.  It is our sacred responsibility to ensure that those labors as part of our Church’s mission will serve as inspiration toward the final unity among Orthodox Christians in Ukraine.

With these sentiments in mind, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has designated Saturday, 2 June 2018, as a Day of Prayer in memory of Patriarch Mstyslav. On that day, a Memorial Service will be served at 11 a.m. in his Holy Resurrection Mausoleum Crypt of St. Andrew Memorial Church, South Bound Brook, NJ. Following the service, a Luncheon and Memorial “Academia” will take place in Pokrova Sisterhood Community Social Center, with the presentations of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Dr. Oleksander Sahan (National Academy of Science of Ukraine) and Dr. Andriy Smyrnov (Ostroh University). Throughout the day, the Ukrainian History and Education Center will offer tours of the Patriarch’s resting place and of memorial exhibit surrounding it, honoring his life and ministry.

We hereby extend to you an invitation to participate in the Memorial service and Luncheon and “Academia” honoring the prayerful legacy of Patriarch Mstyslav of blessed memory – again on 2 June 2018 – 11 a.m.
