On Wednesday, January 18, 2017 His Grace Archbishop-Elect Daniel, following the arrival to the capital of United Kingdom – London, for the celebration of the Holy and Sacred Feast of Theophany of our Lord with the local Ukrainian Orthodox community met with His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain at the offices of the Archdiocese in London. Participating in the meeting were Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Matwijchuk, President of Consistory of the UAOC in Great Britain and Very Rev. Fr. Vitalij Derewianka, pastor of the Holy Archangel Ukrainian Orthodox Parish of Genk, Belgium.

During the cordial meeting, the hierarchs discussed the status of Orthodox communities in Great Britain, especially the possibility of formation of new Ukrainian Orthodox parish communities, etc. In particular, Archbishop Gregorios and Archbishop-elect Daniel reflected upon the rich history of the Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in Great Britain and other Orthodox communities of the area. Vladyka Daniel conveyed prayerful greetings of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony (Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Diaspora and USA)

In addition, the hierarchs exchanges their thoughts about the importance of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in Diaspora that were created by the Pre-Conciliar Meeting in Chambesy.

In conclusion of the meeting, His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios gave Vladyka Daniel a tour of the Archdiocesan chapel of Annunciation.

Bidding farewell to each other, His Eminence Archbishop-elect Daniel presented His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios with the copies of the newly published bilingual (Ukrainian and English) 2017 Calendar of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora as well as a copy of the icon of Holy Metropolitans of Kyiv. In return, Archbishop Gregorios presented Vladyka Daniel and accompanying clergy with the commemorative gifts.

Later in the day, Vladyka Daniel visited the historical headquarters of the Association of Ukrainian in Great Britain, which is the largest representative body for Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian descent. It exists to develop, promote and support the interests of the Ukrainian community in the UK.

Entering the historical premises of the Association, Fr. Bohdan Matwijchuk introduced Vladyka Daniel to Mr. Fedir Kurlak, Chief Executive of the Association, who it his turn gave the Archbishop-elect a tour of the property.

The Association was founded in 1946 by Ukrainians who came to Great Britain at the end of the Second World War. AUGB operates a network of 28 branches, with their own social/cultural center, across the UK. There are also 19 smaller branches and sub-branches, which do not have their own center, but organize periodic events for Ukrainians in their area.

The Association also has a highly respected reference library and archive in London, a gift shop, publishes the only bilingual Ukrainian-English newspaper in the UK, ‘Ukrayinska Dumka’.

AUGB works closely with other community organizations, including the Association of Ukrainian Women, the Association of Ukrainian Teachers and Educators, youth organizations and others. The oganization has a working relationship with the Embassy of Ukraine in the United Kingdom.

Internationally, AUGB is a member of the Ukrainian World Congress (CKY) and its European counterpart (EKY), and works with various organizations in Ukraine, including government and academic institutions.

AUGB organizes campaigns and events to promote and commemorate aspects of Ukrainian history and culture. The 2008 campaign was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor, the artificial famine in Ukraine in 1932-33 in which 7 million Ukrainians, including a third of Ukraine’s children, died from enforced starvation. Previous campaigns have included the 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, which was accompanied by an exhibition of original photographs and documents in conjunction with the National Museum of the History of Ukraine and a National commemoration celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Ukraine's bard, Taras Shevchenko.

In the conclusion of the tour, Vladyka Daniel learned about the very first Divine Liturgy served on the premises of the Association by His Eminence Metropolitan Mstyslav (Skrypnyk) in 1940s.

In order to properly mark the 70th Anniversary of Ukrainians in Great Britain Vladyka Daniel committed to travel back to UK in mid-August for the prayerful observance of religious ministry and ethnic activities of Ukrainians in the United Kingdom.
