Bishop Daniel Pays a Visit to Znamianka Orphanage in Kirovohrad Region of Ukraine

“Wait a second, I would like to offer you something… well, not for you but for the children that are with you this afternoon…” These words of Olia, a waitress from CHELINTANO pizza restaurant in Znamianka, Kirovohrad region caught everyone’s attention as she walked through the crowd of customers, distributing air balloons to every single child of Znamianka children’s orphanage, who were treated to a full day out experience on June 10, 2015.

With the blessing of the spiritual father of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Bishop Daniel traveled to the remote areas of Central and Eastern Ukraine, delivering humanitarian aid to the refugees and wounded soldiers of the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Traveling through Znamianka region, Vladyka Daniel made a special effort to visit for a day the orphanage that has a special place in the heart of the charitable outreach ministry of the UOC of the USA.

Arriving by train to Kirovohrad region, a crowd of children from the orphanage, headed by Tetiana Ivanivna Valko, director of the III-IV profile orphanage institution, greeted the hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA with the embrace and simple kisses of love. Yet there was another surprise for everyone in attendance: a few days before the trip of Vladyka Daniel to the orphanage was planned, he received a Facebook message from Subdeacon Andrew Swanson (formerly from Dormition of the Birth-Giver of God Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Jones, OK, who was also a College Mission Trip member 8 years ago), who informed the bishop that he is visiting Ukraine on a private tour and would like to spend a day in Znamianka with the children. Obviously, Vladyka Daniel welcomed the opportunity to have Subdeacon Andrew escort him on the trip. So, Subdeacon Andrew walked into the crowd with His Grace, and the children recognized him, yet questioning right in the terminal of the train station: “what happened to his long beard? He does not have it anymore…”

A full day of activities was planned at the orphanage following the arrival of the bishop. Some children were waiting by the entrance door, exclaiming in unison – “Finally, You Have Arrived!”; while others gathered in the main auditorium in order to present a full welcome concert to the bishop of the Church, who has been leading the Mission Teams of Students of the UOC of the USA for the last 12 years, thus fulfilling the commandment of our Savior to care for the orphans. The concert itself consisted of about 20 songs and some 15 poetry compositions, memorized by the children, who recited them while sitting in their wheelchairs with deformed arms and legs, - yet their eyes embraced with love every single parishioner of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA that has been contributing financially, materially and most importantly through prayer into their physical and spiritual wellbeing.

Speaking on behalf of Metropolitan Antony, clergy and the faithful of the Church, Bishop Daniel related the words of love and concern for the children and staff of the orphanage, reminding everyone that while the physical distance between the threshold of church parish communities of the UOC of the USA and the doorsteps of the orphanage is great, there is no real limitation and set distance for the love that is constantly being expressed by the members of the Church for the children of the orphanage. The love that the children express for the members of the Church is also felt, as their preparation for the bishop’s visit testifies to the solemnity and seriousness of love that has been nurtured for years. His Grace also had a chance to visit the newly remodeled Montessori educational rooms, as well to try the remote controls of all air conditioner units that were installed through the generosity of various parishes of the UOC of the USA.

Following the afternoon siesta at the orphanage, the children boarded the 20 passenger Mercedes Sprinter minivan, that two years ago was donated to the orphanage through the generosity of the UOC of the USA, and traveled to a local CHELINTANO pizza restaurant in the central district of Znamianka. While initially the children were unsure of the food ordering process, the single English expression “ice cream” changed the atmosphere in the restaurant for everyone in attendance… Just a list of things that made the final check after the visit to CHELINTANO: 50 ice cream cones, 30 bottles of Sprite, 15 bottles of Coca-Cola, containers of juice, and most importantly about 60 slices of pizza were ordered and consumed. While the list is long, the enjoyment of the experience was extraordinary: the process of sitting in the booth or the table; the ability to FaceTime via WiFi with the staff of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (South Bound Brook, NJ); utilization of plastic forks and knives; however, the most important event of the day was the ability to travel outside the walls of the orphanage institution and to celebrate the visit of the bishop through the generosity of the Church.

Just as the trip to the restaurant was coming to an end, about five waitresses of the restaurant came to the tables, asking the teachers and Vladyka Daniel about the visit of the handicapped children. They looked surprised to learn that the visitors to their restaurant came from a local orphanage; yet the staff of the restaurant was moved to tears once they learned in detail about the ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA among the kids of Znamianka orphanage.

The next thing was a full procession of air balloons, prepared by the staff of CHELINTANO, especially through the generosity of one waitress – Olia, who with tears embraced each child presenting to them air balloons (which were all donated by her). Yet there was another surprise, the clerks from various local stores walked out and started gifting the children with gifts from the stores – small gifts in size –yet so powerful in meaning. Everyone cried then…

The day formally concluded with another short visit to the bedridden children of the orphanage and finally to the train station in order to bid farewell to Bishop Daniel, who departed for Kyiv, promising to return in the near future and upon the request of the kids to bring back the Missionaries from the past Summer and Winter Trips and to bring (quoting the children) “as many new American friends as you can fit on the plane…”

Prayerful Visit
