Children of Znamynka Orphanage Treated to a Special Gift

Every year around the celebration of the feast of Holy Wonderworker Nicholas, the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA offer a special seasonal gift to those for whom the Lord Himself directed to care and pray.

Fulfilling the mandate of Christ and with the blessing of the spiritual father of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Bishop Daniel, who is presently visiting Ukraine with the mission to assist the wounded soldiers and refugees of the armed conflict in Ukraine, visited with the children of Znamianka orphanage, presenting them with several gifts on behalf of the clergy and faithful of the UOC of the USA.

Every single year, mission teams of the Church travel to Ukraine in order to bring a touch of Christ’s presence and love to the children of various orphanages. This year the gift of love was different from the usual visits. Outside of sponsoring an annual Nativity visit of Kropyvnytsky State theater to the orphanage and offering Nativity season greetings and gifts to the children and workers of the orphanage, Vladyka Daniel, acting on behalf of the UOC of the USA, treated several children to a visit to the capital of Ukraine – Kyiv.

Early hours of Saturday morning (December 20, 2014) brought a bus from the orphanage (the minivan, which was sponsored by the generosity of the faithful of the Church and presented to the institution a few years ago) to Kyiv. During the full day of activities, organized by Maryna Voronovych, the children visited Kyiv City “Nemo” Aquarium, participating in Christmas show, featuring dolphins. Moreover, the children were treated to a tour of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Holy Archangel Michael Monastery, Independence Square – Maydan.

The children joyfully in unison selected a place for meals – everyone wanted to be treated to a full McDonald’s experience.

The day concluded with several hours of visit to the annual Christmas tree village in downtown Kyiv. Witnessing dozens of children’s choirs caroling on the streets of Kyiv, the pilgrims – children of Znamyanka orphanage - to the ancient capital of Kyiv Rus-Ukraine learned at length about the spiritual significance of Nativity of our Lord and prayerfully departed for Znamyanka in the late hours od Saturday, sharing the joy of a four hours trip, leading to a special visit to the orphanage of the long-time friend – His Grace Vladyka Daniel, bishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.
