Sunday, 16 November, 2014 was a day of grace for the parish family of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Northampton, Pennsylvania. His Eminence Antony, Metropolitan of the U.O.C. of U.S.A., visited his spiritual children and bestowed upon them the blessings of Christ Himself through the celebration of the Eucharistic Banquet at the Holy Altar of the Lord.
In the presence of the parish community, His Eminence elevated to the rank of Protodeacon, deacon Michael Sawarynski, in honour of his decade long intrepid and dedicated service to the Lord and His spiritual flock of Orthodox Christians in Northampton. Protodeacon Michael has been a beacon of Orthodox evangelism and witness in the Lehigh Valley for many years; but it is through his zealous liturgical and pedagogic presence in the parish and St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary that his true love for the Faith has shone forth. After thirty-five years of teaching at the Northampton High School, where his renown as an excellent pedagogue was second to none, Protodeacon Michael dedicated himself, with the enthusiastic ‘blessing’ of his beloved wife Martha and extensive family of children and grandchildren, to the calling of the Church to serve the Lord and His Holy Orthodox Flock.
The luncheon following the Hierarchic Divine Liturgy was attended by parishioners, friends and, most importantly, by his family: wife Martha; children and their spouses: Matthew, Andrea, Christine, Paul, Cheryl; grandchildren: Anthony, Andrew, Nicholas, Adrianna, Gabriel, Isabelle, John; his beloved daughter Maria and her husband Mark as well as their children Zachary, Patrick, Tristan and Brendan who live in Arizona, were spiritually present in Protodeacon’s prayers.
