Ukrainian-American Community of NY Metropolitan Area Remembers Victims of Genocidal Famine in Ukraine of 1932-1933

As millions of Ukrainians throughout the world marked the 80th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Genocidal Famine of 1932-1933, the walls of the 19th century St. Patrick Cathedral in New York, NY welcomed and were filled with about 5000 people and solemn chanting of a Memorial service, honoring the memory of about 10 million people, the victims of the artificially created Genocide-Famine in Ukraine.

On Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 1:00PM, the Ukrainian community, under the leadership of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) held its now annual requiem service to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Genocide of 1932-1933, known in Ukrainian as the Holodomor. The clergy and hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic Churches (His Eminence Metropolitan Antony of the Eastern Eparchy and Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA; His Grace Bishop Paul Chomnytsky of Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford, CT and His Grace Bishop Daniel of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA) led this year’s Memorial Pahankhyda for the repose of the souls of the millions of innocent victims of the Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-1933.

His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, the Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, who opened the program this year, called the thousands gathered to join in prayer for those who perished in the inhuman genocide – many of them who never had a grave or a proper burial and because entire families perished – had on one else to pray for them but those gathered in the Cathedral 80 years later. In his address the Metropolitan stated: “Once again we have come to the annual commemoration of the victims of one of, if not the worst, acts of genocide ever committed against mankind – the purposefully created and perpetrated 1932-33 artificial and genocidal famine in Ukraine, masterminded by Josef Stalin himself and managed by those who devoted their lives to him and carried out every command – regardless of what the consequences were for not only the seven to ten million Ukrainian men, women and children who succumbed to the famine, but also for the countless thousands or even more millions of Ukrainians and others who dared to challenge the “plan” of the day – all throughout the Stalin era.  The famine was a part of the master plan to destroy the mind (intelligentsia), the soul (the church and her clergy) and the spirit (farmers and villagers, who embodied the national culture and ancient traditions) of the Ukrainian nation.

We call to mind those who were too long forgotten – many of them relatives, neighbors, co-workers and friends of a significant number of people still alive today.  In spite of the fact that the government of the former Soviet Union and those of other nations in the world deliberately attempted – and in some cases still do today – to eradicate the memory of this horrific disaster from historical annals – we again make the promise that we will NEVER forget.  We will NOT allow their martyrdom to go without meaning.  We WILL remind the world’s political leaders that they no longer have unlimited and unquestioned power to destroy life.  We WILL remind mankind of the sanctity of life and the God-given rights of every individual human being.  We call to mind the words of Edmund Burke:  “Those who don’t know (or ignore – George Santayana) history are destined (condemned) to repeat it.”

Our deceased brothers and sisters did NOT perish in vain.  Today they are commemorated also throughout Ukraine, regardless of the attempts of some powerful political figures to prevent it.  Although stifled, the memory of those victims and the memory of the famine itself festered beneath the surface consciousness of the people of Ukraine and maintained, regardless of all efforts of the 74 years of a godless regime, maintained a self-identity, which led to the independence of the nation – an independence achieved without the shedding of blood.  The endurance of the horror of the famine – and other almost incredible conditions of life through most of the 20th century preserved – albeit deeply within the conscience and social fabric of the nation – that self-identity, which serves as the foundation for nation building in Ukraine today and tomorrow into what will certainly be one of the most important, productive and freedom loving nations of the world.

We pray to God this day – to the Helper of the helpless, the Hope of the hopeless, the Savior of the storm-tossed, the Haven of the voyager, the Healer of the sick.  We stand before Him in humility and beseech His eternal blessings upon us and that He will grant eternal rest where the Light of His Countenance shines upon those we remember.  May their souls rest in eternal happiness and their memory be eternal in God’s Heavenly Kingdom.

As your spiritual fathers, we call you all to personal prayer and actions, which will serve to remember our brothers and sisters.  Fast for an entire day to reach – in a minimal way – a better comprehension of what they endured for months, each day suffering more until the end finally came.  During these holy days prior to the great feast of the Nativity of our Lord – Philip’s Fast – set aside a sum of your riches daily – and make a Nativity gift to the establishment of national memorials – or – to your local food bank to aid those in your own communities who know none of the riches you enjoy on a daily basis.  If our memory of those who perished in the famine does not result in a willingness to act some way in their name, it will mean little to us.

As always, we pray for you, we pray for our Ukrainian Nation, which still endures an extremely difficult path to true democracy and we ask for your prayers for us.  May the Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Love of God the Father and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Following the requiem service, representatives from the United States government were offered an opportunity to deliver remarks.  Among the speakers was Mrs. Tamara Gallo Olexy, president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, which along with the National Holodomor Committee and the Churches organizes the event each year.  She introduced Senator Charles Shumer who represents the state of New York in the US Senate.  The Senator is a regular participant in this commemoration for at least the last ten years and always makes an emotional and stirring condemnation of the genocide and those responsible for it, but calls not only Ukrainians but people of all ethnic backgrounds to join in remembering the victims and aiding in stopping the acts of genocide that still occur in other countries around the world today. At the conclusion of his remarks, the Senator paid special tribute to the survivors of Ukrainian Famine , who were present at the Memorial service, among which were parishioners of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in NY City - Alexander and Nadia Savaryn and Tamara Sidorak, - they were the ones that approached a specially prepared table before the sacred area of the cathedral to place candles and Ukrainian children followed with blades of wheat, candles, wreaths and flowers to place at the table – all in memory of the victims of the Holodomor.

Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA, His Excellence Alexander Motsyk spoke about the horror of the genocidal Holodomor and invited everyone in attendance to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony of the National Holodomor Memorial in Washington, DC on December 4, 2013. This will be an enormous event for Ukrainian people everywhere and millions of people will view the memorial annually because it is located in a very prominent place near Union Station and the US Capitol building where Congress is seated.

A letter from the White House was read by one of the US representatives to the United Nations and Bishop Paul of Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford, CT closed the commemoration expressing gratitude to all the hierarchs and clergy, to the speakers, and to all present in the Cathedral and finally to His Excellency Cardinal Dolan who, along with his predecessors for nearly two decades invited the Ukrainian-American community to conduct the commemoration in the Cathedral.

The Dumka Choir, under the direction of maestro Vasyl Hrechynsky chanted solemn responses to a Memorial Panakhyda for the Famine victims.  The Memorial event concluded with the singing of “Bozhe Velykyj”.
