XIII's Regular Sobor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Eparchy of South America Convened in Fram, Paraguay

About a hundred delegates from Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina gathered for the 13th Triennial SOBOR of the South American Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is under spiritual omophorion of the Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and upon the invitation of Archbishop Jeremiah, the Ruling Hierarch of the Eparchy of South America of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Grace Bishop Daniel traveled to Fram, Paraguay, representing the Metropolitan at the South American Sobor.

Upon arriving to the Asuncion International Airport of the capital of Paraguay - Bishop Daniel was welcomed to South America by Ihumen Dimitri (Gastillos di Oliveira) of the Meeting of the Lord Ukrainian Orthodox Monastery in Paraguay and Mr. Nicholas Taraciuk of Theophany of our Lord Ukrainian Orthodox Basilica in Fram, Paraguay.

On Friday evening, September 6, 2013, His Eminence Archbishop Jeremiah and His Grace Bishop Daniel presided over the Vespers service with about 100 delegates that were arriving to Paraguay for the Sobor until the early hours of Saturday, September 7, 2013.  Both hierarchs addressed the delegates in Ukrainian, Portuguese, English and Spanish languages, calling upon them to enter the Sobor sessions seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon the delegates of the sacred gathering, as they address spiritual and social issues that effect the parishes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in South America.

Early hours of Saturday morning gathered clergy and delegates of the Eparchy  with Archbishop Jeremiah and Bishop Daniel for the Divine Liturgy, by which the official XIII's Sobor of the Church was opened. It must be mentioned that each liturgical service of the Sobor was served by a priest representing one of the three countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay) where the faithful of the Church established their parishes some almost 100 years ago.

Following the Divine Liturgy, His Grace Bishop Daniel opened the first formal session of the SOBOR with a letter from His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, in which the Metropolitan writes:

“Your Eminence and dear brother in service to our Lord, Reverend Fathers and beloved faithful in Christ,

GLORY TO OUR LORD AND GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!

I greet you all in the Name of our Lord and with a deep sense of love and pride (good pride) about each of you and your commitment to service in our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the leadership of your energetic and devoted Spiritual Father and successor to the Holy Apostles of our Lord, His Eminence Archbishop Jeremiah.  We never cease to be amazed at how the South American Eparch has risen developed into a vibrant, God-loving community of parishes and faithful striving with deep faith and trust in our Lord to serve Him and fellow man with passionate love, peace and mercy.  If the proper leadership had not been provided by God in the person of His Eminence, we would not attempt to imagine how different the reality would be today.  What a state of joy to be in before the eyes of God Almighty as we commemorate the 1025 anniversary of the Baptism of our historical homeland, Ukraine!

I recall most fondly my visit several years ago along with the Mission Team from the Orthodox Christian Mission Commission when we visited several parishes in Paraguay and were supposed to provide inspiration and encourage renewed commitment in the hearts, minds and souls of the faithful – especially the youth – but found ourselves departing much more enriched from what we witnessed among you!  It was such a joy to behold, which makes it even more difficult for me to be absent from among you for this Sobor and feast of Love!  For numerous reasons…, I was unable to make the journey to guide you through the important work of the Sobor.  This is so difficult for me, since I have never before found myself in circumstances that would prohibit keeping a commitment that I had made to be present with my faithful – whatever the occasion.  Be assured, however, that I am with you in spirit and prayer and I will closely follow your work and your joy at gathering together as a family in Christ through reports that Bishop Daniel will send me through the marvel of the World Wide Web – the Internet.

We rejoice at the commemoration of the Baptism of Ukraine because of what our ancestors accomplished in the Name of Christ and because of the incredible spiritual legacy that has been handed down to us through 1025 years – a legacy that we are called upon to enrich and pass on intact to the generations that follow us through this earthly pilgrimage.  All of the work accomplished during this present Sobor MUST be done with this important goal in mind!  We cannot live each day concerned only about our own individual selves and our own temporary happiness and satisfaction.  No – we must always keep in mind those who will come after us and be certain to work diligently to ensure that what we received from our parents and grandparents is safeguarded to our children and grandchildren and beyond.

In the face of the secularization that reaches unapologetically into every corner of the world with the goal of turning all mankind away from Christ through the sometimes sick pleasures and obsessions of daily life, we Ukrainian Orthodox Christians must follow the example of our forefathers in our willingness to say “NO!” to anything that tempts us away from Christ, His Church and His Love.  He gave us two new commandments:  “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with ALL your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it - Love your neighbor as yourself.”  These are the rules by which we must live our lives – without hesitation, without fear and with courage – as did our forefathers, among whom were thousands willing to give their very lives for Christ and fellow man – all the way from the Princedom of Kyiv through the Tsarist and Communist eras to this very day.  So many gave their lives that the saintly historians of the Monastery of the Caves (Pecherska Lavra) commented that the rivers of the nation ran red from the blood of the martyrs.  Let us ask ourselves today as we proceed through our time together – do we have such commitment to Christ – or even a small measure of such commitment.  If the response is negative to any degree, then we all know that we have work to do – on ourselves as individuals and collectively as the Church.

I, for one, along with Archbishop Jeremiah and Bishop Daniel believe that we are still capable of working miracles in a very secularized world.  I believe that we can change our own lives so that we can change the lives of others!  All that is necessary is to follow the example of our Lord – of Love, Compassion and Mercy in every aspect our lives.  You all know that good feeling that floods through our mind, body and soul when we are able to do something good for someone else, when we make someone happy, when we make someone whole.  Such good feelings do not have to be temporary or very rare.  It can be the permanent state of our life if we follow the two new commandments.

My prayer this day is that you all begin to comprehend the beauty of what has been handed down to you from your forefathers, but also what has been handed down to you of our Lord’s teaching and guidance through Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition through the Holy Apostles of all ages and through the lives of millions of saints who pass from this life directly into the presence of God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – without having to await the Final Judgment when our Lord returns to establish God’s Kingdom here on earth.  Sainthood is a real possibility for all of us!  All the icons of the saints of history in our Churches serve the purpose of reminding us of this.  It is as if they are saying to us: “Having put on Christ through Holy Baptism and receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit through Holy Chrismation, YOU are called to be one of us!”  The icons are not just decorations – they serve as windows into Heaven permitting us to see what our real goal in life is – to become one with God!

May all you think, say and do during this holy convocation – the Sobor – be with this goal in mind.  I am praying for you throughout these specific days and beyond.  I ask to be remembered in your prayers because it is through those prayers that I am strengthened to live up to my own preaching!  May the Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Love of God the Father and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Immediately following the official opening of the SOBOR, a greeting from His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew was presented.

The Ruling hierarch of the Eparchy, His Eminence Archbishop Jeremiah addressed the Sobor body with his Archpastoral remarks, reflecting upon the last three years of successful ministries of the Eparchy. The archbishop reflected upon the need of new vocations and dedicated clergy service in the Eparchy. Moreover, a report was presented on the status of several seminarians that are studying in various theological seminaries, in particular in St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Bound Brook, NJ.

Prior to the presentation of the formal Agenda, the delegates of the XIII's Sobor offered their greetings to the delegates from Brazil, as their homeland celebrated Independence Day on the very same day of the Sobor gathering in Paraguay.

The next several hours of the day were dedicated to the reports from about 30 parishes of the Eparchy during which various ministries of the Church were discussed in detail. Among others, Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox parish from Brazil reported a joyful news that a local government donated a community tractor to the parish family, so it may be shared by the entire town community for their farming needs.

Among major decisions of the day was establishment of organized YOUTH program for the Eparchy. Bishop Daniel, on behalf of the Consistory of the UOC of the USA shared with the delegates of the Sobor the North-American experience working with the youth through Camp ministry, Religious Education and Missionary ministry among the orphans of Ukraine and less fortunate in America and Canada. Moreover, the younger generation of delegates asked for a meeting with both bishops of the Church for Q/A session in order to pray, learn and share their visions and concerns about social and moral issues that effect the parishioners of the Church on South American Continent.

In addition, the resolution was passed to increase the voluntary membership contributions to the ministries of the Eparchy by 20%.

Once the formal resolutions were presented, the Sobor delegates offered their words of gratitude to Metropolitan Antony for his guidance and presence through his representative - His Grace Bishop Daniel.

The Sobor ended on Sunday morning with the Archpastoral Divine Liturgy, commemorating the 1025th Anniversary of Christianity in Kyivan Rus-Ukraine, served by Archbishop Jeremiah, Bishop Daniel with numerous clergy from Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina concelebrating.
