With hearts filled with gratitude to Almighty God and souls uplifted by the beauty of Orthodox Christian fellowship, the faithful of Holy Apostle Simon Zealot Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Paris, France prayerfully gathered to celebrate the Centennial of their beloved parish community - a sacred milestone marking one hundred years of unwavering faith, sacrificial service, and steadfast devotion to Christ and the Ukrainian Orthodox community in France.

The celebration became a profound witness to the enduring spiritual strength of the Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in the diaspora as His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, in his capacity as Ruling Bishop of the Western European Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Diaspora, arrived in Paris to preside over the prayerful festivities.

Greeting the archpastor at the entrance of the holy temple were the Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Bahlai, pastor of the parish, members of the Parish Council led by Parish Board President Mr. Pavlo Frolov, children of the parish carrying flowers, and faithful who filled the temple with prayerful joy. Clergy from Ukrainian Orthodox parishes throughout France and Germany joined in concelebration, manifesting the spiritual unity of the Church beyond borders and nations.

As Archbishop Daniel entered the church, the faithful offered traditional words of welcome, expressing gratitude for the spiritual care of the Mother Church and for the archpastoral love extended to the Ukrainian Orthodox faithful throughout Western Europe.

In his response, Archbishop Daniel thanked Fr. Vasyl and the parish leadership for their devotion, sacrifice, and tireless labor in preserving this sacred spiritual home for future generations. His Eminence especially noted the extensive renovations currently taking place within the parish temple as the community prayerfully prepares for the culmination of the remodeling project and the official Centennial celebrations planned for January of 2027.

“A parish is not merely walls, icons, or architecture,” reflected Archbishop Daniel. “A parish becomes holy when hearts are united in prayer, when sacrifices are offered in love, and when Christ Himself is allowed to dwell among His people. Your labor is not simply construction - it is the building of a spiritual home where future generations will encounter God.”

Fr. Vasyl, visibly moved by the presence of the hierarch and clergy, invited Archbishop Daniel to enter into the spiritual life of the parish and to pray for the faithful people entrusted to his pastoral care - families carrying both the joys and wounds of life, especially amid the suffering caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

During the Divine Liturgy, countless faithful approached the Holy Chalice to receive the Most Pure Body and Precious Blood of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, revealing the living heartbeat of a parish nourished by the Holy Eucharist.

In his sermon following the Gospel reading, Archbishop Daniel offered a profound spiritual reflection connected to the feast commemorating the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council. With pastoral warmth and theological depth, His Eminence explained the historical significance of the Council of Nicaea, where the Church Fathers defended the truth of Christ’s divinity and prayerfully articulated the foundations of Orthodox Christian faith.

The Archbishop reminded the faithful that the canon of Holy Scripture and the teachings of the Church were not assembled merely as historical texts, but as a living revelation meant to transform the human heart.

“The Word of God cannot remain imprisoned upon the pages of a book,” Archbishop Daniel preached. “The Gospel becomes alive only when it is written upon the heart of the believer. The Scriptures must not merely be read - they must be lived. Every act of compassion, forgiveness, mercy, and sacrifice becomes another page of the Gospel written into the life of the world.”

Reflecting further upon the witness of the Holy Fathers, the Archbishop reminded the faithful that unity in the Church is born not through human ambition, but through humility, prayer, and faithfulness to Christ.

“The Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council gathered not to defend opinions, but to protect Truth - the truth that Christ is the Son of God, the Light of the world, and the Savior of mankind. Today we are called to defend that same truth - not only with words, but through the holiness of our lives.”

Because the celebration coincided closely with Mother’s Day observances both in Ukraine and France, Archbishop Daniel also offered heartfelt greetings to all mothers present in the temple. While Mother’s Day is celebrated in Ukraine on May 10 and in France on May 31, His Eminence noted the providential blessing of being together in Paris on this Sunday to honor mothers both living and departed.

In deeply emotional remarks, Archbishop Daniel reflected upon the memory of his own mother and the immeasurable spiritual role mothers carry within the life of the Church and humanity itself.

“A mother teaches us our first prayer, our first sign of the Cross, our first understanding of love and sacrifice,” the Archbishop shared. “Even when mothers depart from this earthly life, their prayers continue to embrace us before the throne of God. Today we thank the Lord for every mother whose hands carried us, whose tears protected us, and whose faith shaped our souls.”

Special prayers were offered for mothers who have reposed in the Lord, as the faithful prayerfully remembered generations of women who preserved faith, language, culture, and spiritual identity through years of suffering, immigration, war, and uncertainty.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel presented Fr. Vasyl with a jeweled pectoral cross in recognition of his devoted pastoral leadership, sacrificial ministry, and loving care for the parish family.

Addressing Fr. Vasyl before the faithful, Archbishop Daniel stated: “A true pastor does not simply administer a parish - he suffers, prays, rejoices, and carries the people within his heart. Through your ministry, this community has remained alive spiritually, culturally, and pastorally. May the Lord strengthen you for many blessed years of service.”

The Archbishop also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Parish Council and faithful for their commitment to the ongoing renovation of the temple and for their unwavering support of the Ukrainian community in France, especially since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

Throughout the years of suffering and displacement, the parish community has opened its doors to refugees, assisted families in need, organized humanitarian outreach, and become a spiritual refuge for Ukrainians seeking comfort far from their homeland.

“The world sees buildings and institutions,” Archbishop Daniel reflected. “But God sees compassionate hearts. Since the beginning of the war, this parish has become more than a church - it has become a sanctuary of healing, hope, dignity, and love.”

Following the dismissal, Fr. Vasyl presented mothers with flowers, while Archbishiop Daniel bestowed his blessing upon each parishioner, presenting them with icon cards as expressions of gratitude and filial love, praying that the Lord would preserve the parish community for another century of faithful witness.

The celebration then continued in the parish hall, where clergy, faithful, and guests gathered for a warm and joyful fellowship meal. During both formal presentations and informal conversations, Archbishop Daniel reflected upon the sacred mission of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church within France and throughout Western Europe.

He reminded the faithful that although Ukrainians may live far from their homeland, they are never separated from their spiritual identity when they remain rooted in Christ and His Holy Church.

“The Church preserves not only our traditions,” Archbishop Daniel concluded, “but the very soul of our people. Here in Paris, amid the challenges of modern life and the wounds of war, you continue to proclaim that faith is stronger than fear, prayer is stronger than despair, and love is stronger than hatred. This parish is a living testimony that Christ walks with His people - yesterday, today, and forever.”

З серцями, сповненими вдячності Всемогутньому Богові, та душами, піднесеними красою православного християнського братерства, вірні Української Православної Парафії Святого Симона Зилота в Парижі, Франція, молитовно зібралися для відзначення сторічного ювілею своєї улюбленої парафіяльної громади - священної історичної віхи, яка знаменує сто років непохитної віри, жертовного служіння та незламної відданості Христові й українській православній громаді у Франції. 

Святкування стало глибоким свідченням невмирущої духовної сили українських православних вірних у діаспорі, адже Його Високопреосвященство Архієпископ Даниїл, у своїй якості Правлячого Архиєрея Західноєвропейської Єпархії Української Православної Церкви в Діаспорі, прибув до Парижа, щоб очолити молитовні урочистості. 

Біля входу до святого храму архіпастиря зустріли настоятель парафії - протоієрей Василь Баглай, члени Парафіяльної Ради на чолі з головою Павлом Фроловим, діти парафії з квітами та численні вірні, які наповнили храм радістю молитви. До святкування також долучилося духовенство українських православних парафій Франції та Німеччини, являючи духовну єдність Церкви понад державними кордонами та народами. 

Коли Архієпископ Даниїл увійшов до храму, вірні звернулися до нього з традиційними словами привітання, висловлюючи вдячність за духовну опіку Матері-Церкви та архіпастирську любов, яку отримують українські православні вірні у Західній Європі. 

У своєму слові Архієпископ Даниїл подякував о. Василю та парафіяльному проводу за їхню відданість, жертовність і невтомну працю у збереженні цього святого духовного дому для майбутніх поколінь. Владика особливо відзначив масштабні ремонтні роботи, які нині тривають у храмі, оскільки громада молитовно готується до завершення реконструкції та офіційного святкування сторіччя парафії у січні 2027 року. 

«Парафія - це не лише стіни, ікони чи архітектура, - зазначив Архієпископ Даниїл. - Парафія стає святою тоді, коли серця людей єднаються у молитві, коли жертви приносяться з любов’ю і коли Сам Христос перебуває серед Свого народу. Ваша праця - це не просто будівництво. Це творення духовного дому, де майбутні покоління зустрічатимуть Бога».

Отець Василь, глибоко зворушений присутністю архіпастиря та духовенства, запросив Архієпископа Даниїла увійти у духовне життя парафії та молитися за людей, довірених його пастирській опіці - за родини, які несуть у собі як радощі, так і рани життя, особливо в час страждань, спричинених війною в Україні. 

Під час Божественної Літургії численні вірні приступили до Святої Чаші, приймаючи Пречисте Тіло і Чесну Кров Господа і Спасителя нашого Ісуса Христа, відкриваючи живе серце парафії, яка живиться Святою Євхаристією. 

У своїй проповіді після читання Святого Євангелія Архієпископ Даниїл виголосив глибоку духовну науку, пов’язану зі святом Святих Отців Першого Вселенського Собору. З пастирською теплотою та богословською глибиною Владика пояснив історичне значення Нікейського Собору, на якому Отці Церкви боронили істину Божества Христового та молитовно сформулювали основи православної віри. 

Архієпископ нагадав вірним, що канон Святого Письма та вчення Церкви були укладені не просто як історичні тексти, але як живе Божественне Одкровення, покликане перемінювати людське серце. 

«Слово Боже не може залишатися ув’язненим на сторінках книги, - проповідував Архієпископ Даниїл. - Євангеліє оживає лише тоді, коли воно записане у серці віруючої людини. Святе Письмо потрібно не лише читати - ним потрібно жити. Кожен акт співчуття, прощення, милосердя та жертовності стає новою сторінкою Євангелія, написаною у житті світу».

Роздумуючи далі над свідченням Святих Отців, Архієпископ наголосив, що єдність Церкви народжується не через людські амбіції, а через смирення, молитву та вірність Христові. 

«Отці Першого Вселенського Собору зібралися не для того, щоб захищати власні думки, а щоб оберігати Істину - істину про те, що Христос є Сином Божим, Світлом світу і Спасителем людства. Сьогодні й ми покликані захищати цю саму істину - не лише словами, але святістю нашого життя».

Оскільки святкування припало на період вшанування Дня Матері як в Україні, так і у Франції, Архієпископ Даниїл також звернувся зі щирими привітаннями до всіх матерів, присутніх у храмі. Хоча в Україні День Матері відзначається 10 травня, а у Франції - 31 травня, Владика зауважив, що Божим Провидінням усі зібралися цього недільного дня в Парижі, щоб вшанувати матерів - як живих, так і тих, що відійшли до Господа. 

У глибоко зворушливих словах Архієпископ Даниїл поділився спогадами про власну матір та роздумами про неосяжну духовну роль матері у житті Церкви та людства. 

«Мати навчає нас першої молитви, першого хресного знамення, першого розуміння любові та жертовності, - поділився Архієпископ. - Навіть коли матері відходять із цього земного життя, їхні молитви продовжують огортати нас перед Престолом Божим. Сьогодні ми дякуємо Господу за кожну матір, чиї руки носили нас, чиї сльози захищали нас і чия віра формувала наші душі».

Особливі молитви були піднесені за матерів, які спочили у Господі, коли вірні молитовно згадували покоління жінок, що зберігали віру, мову, культуру та духовну ідентичність у роки страждань, еміграції, війни та невизначеності. 

На завершення Божественної Літургії Архієпископ Даниїл вручив о. Василю оздоблений нагрудний хрест на знак визнання його відданого пастирського служіння, жертовної праці та любові до парафіяльної родини. 

Звертаючись до о. Василя перед вірними, Архієпископ Даниїл сказав: «Справжній пастир не просто адмініструє парафію - він страждає, молиться, радіє і носить людей у своєму серці. Завдяки Вашому служінню ця громада залишається живою духовно, культурно та пастирськи. Нехай Господь укріпить Вас на многії та благії літа служіння».

Архієпископ також висловив щиру вдячність Парафіяльній Раді та вірним за їхню посвяту у продовженні ремонту храму та за непохитну підтримку української громади у Франції, особливо від початку повномасштабної війни в Україні. 

Упродовж років страждання та вимушеного переселення парафіяльна громада відкривала свої двері для біженців, допомагала нужденним родинам, організовувала гуманітарну допомогу та стала духовним прихистком для українців, які шукають розради далеко від рідної землі. 

«Світ бачить будівлі та установи, - зазначив Архієпископ Даниїл. - Але Бог бачить співчутливі серця. Від початку війни ця парафія стала більше, ніж храмом - вона стала місцем зцілення, надії, гідності та любові».

Після відпусту о. Василь подарував матерям квіти, а Архієпископ Даниїл благословив кожного парафіянина, вручаючи іконки як знак вдячності та синівської любові, молячись, щоб Господь зберіг парафіяльну громаду ще на одне століття вірного свідчення. 

Святкування продовжилося у парафіяльній залі, де духовенство, вірні та гості зібралися на теплу й радісну братню трапезу. Під час офіційних виступів та щирих особистих розмов Архієпископ Даниїл роздумував над священною місією Української Православної Церкви у Франції та в усій Західній Європі. 

Владика нагадав вірним, що хоча українці можуть жити далеко від Батьківщини, вони ніколи не втрачають своєї духовної ідентичності, коли залишаються укоріненими у Христі та Його Святій Церкві. 

«Церква зберігає не лише наші традиції, - підсумував Архієпископ Даниїл, - але й саму душу нашого народу. Тут, у Парижі, серед викликів сучасного життя та ран війни, ви продовжуєте свідчити, що віра сильніша за страх, молитва сильніша за відчай, а любов сильніша за ненависть. Ця парафія є живим свідченням того, що Христос перебуває зі Своїм народом - учора, сьогодні і повіки».
