Christ is Risen!      Indeed He is Risen!

In the sacred stillness of the Paschal night, as darkness gave way to the first glimmers of the uncreated Light, the Spiritual Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, became once more the living witness to the greatest mystery of the Christian faith - the Resurrection of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ.

With the blessing of His Eminence, Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel presided over the solemn and bright Paschal liturgical celebrations at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church. Concelebrating with the Archpastor were Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of the parish, Very Rev. Fr. John Lyshyk, Rev. Fr. Pavlo Vysotskyi, and Deacon Andriy Akulenko, together with seminarians and subdeacons of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary. The choir, under the masterful direction of Dr. Michael Andrec, lifted their voices in triumphant proclamation: “Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!”

The Paschal celebration began with the Midnight Office, in which the Church stands mystically at the threshold between death and life, between despair and hope. As Archbishop Daniel has often reflected: “In the silence of the tomb, the world awaited its renewal. For Christ did not enter death as its victim - but as its conqueror. The grave became the womb of eternity, and the Cross the throne of divine love.”

Theologically, Pascha is not merely the commemoration of an event in history - it is the fulfillment of the entire divine economy (οἰκονομία) of salvation. As St. Athanasius the Great teaches, “The Word of God became man so that man might become partaker of divine life.” This divine descent reaches its deepest point in the Crucifixion, where Christ voluntarily embraces death, not as defeat, but as the ultimate act of redemptive love.

The Cross, therefore, is not an instrument of shame, but the axis of salvation, the place where heaven and earth are reconciled. St. John Chrysostom proclaims in his Paschal Homily: “Hell took a body and discovered God; it took earth and encountered Heaven.”

Thus, the Resurrection is the revelation of what was hidden within the Cross - the victory of life over death, of light over darkness, of love over sin.

At the joyous moment of the Paschal Matins and Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel proclaimed the Gospel of the Resurrection in multiple languages, manifesting the universality of the Good News of Christ. This ancient tradition reflects the apostolic command of the Risen Lord: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19).

The multilingual proclamation is not merely symbolic - it is profoundly theological. It reveals that the Resurrection is not bound by ethnicity, culture, or language, but is offered to all humanity. As St. Cyril of Jerusalem teaches: “The Resurrection is the common feast of all creation, the renewal of the world, and the restoration of humanity.”

In this sacred moment, the faithful experienced the Church not as a local gathering alone, but as the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, transcending time and space. Hundreds of faithful gathered in prayer - children standing beside their parents, the elderly supported by their families, all united in the radiant proclamation: “Christ is Risen!”

The Church became a living icon of the Kingdom of God - a community transformed by grace, bearing witness to the Resurrection not only in word, but in life. As Archbishop Daniel reflected in his Paschal sermon: “To celebrate Pascha is not only to remember - it is to become. We are called to become people of the Resurrection, whose lives reflect the victory of Christ over sin, fear, and death.”

The early morning Paschal Vespers continued the celebration, emphasizing that the Resurrection is not confined to a single moment, but unfolds as a continuous reality in the life of the Church.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the faithful brought forward their Paschal baskets for blessing - a cherished tradition within Ukrainian Orthodoxy, rich in theological symbolism.

Each item within the basket proclaims an aspect of the Paschal mystery: Paska (Paschal bread) - Christ Himself, the Bread of Life, risen and offered for the life of the world; Eggs (krashanky/pysanky) - symbols of new life and the Resurrection, the sealed tomb from which life bursts forth; Meat and dairy - the end of the Lenten fast, representing the fullness of joy and celebration in Christ; Salt - the preservation of life and the call for Christians to be “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13); Horseradish (bitter herbs) - a reminder of the bitterness of suffering, transformed by the sweetness of the Resurrection.

In blessing these gifts, the Church sanctifies not only the food, but the entire life of the faithful, affirming that all creation is called to participate in the joy of Pascha.

Pascha is not simply a feast - it is the very foundation of Christian existence. As St. Gregory the Theologian proclaims: “Yesterday I was buried with You, O Christ; today I rise with You in Your Resurrection.”

In the Resurrection, Christ does not merely return to life - He transfigures life itself, opening for humanity the path to eternal communion with God.

Archbishop Daniel, addressing the faithful, concluded with these words: “Beloved in the Lord, let us not leave Pascha within the walls of the temple. Let us carry the light of the Resurrection into the world - into our homes, our communities, and even into places of darkness. For Christ is Risen - and in Him, all things are made new.”

As the bells of St. Andrew Memorial Church resounded across the Spiritual Center, and the faithful departed with joy in their hearts and light in their hands, one truth echoed above all:

Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!

Христос Воскрес!     Воістину Воскрес!

У священній тиші Пасхальної ночі, коли темрява поступалася першим променям нетварного Світла, Духовний осередок Митрополії Української Православної Церкви США у Саут-Баунд-Брук, штат Нью-Джерзі, знову став живим свідченням найбільшої таємниці християнської віри - Воскресіння Господа нашого, Бога і Спасителя Ісуса Христа, яке звершувалося в Українській Православній Церкві-пам’ятнику св. Андрія Первозванного.

З благословення Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США, богослужіння очолив Його Архієпископ Даниїл. Разом з Архіпастирем співслужили: протоієрей Василь Пасакас, настоятель Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника св. Андрія Первозванного, протоієрей Іван Лишик, о. Павло Висоцький та диякон Андрій Акуленко, за участі семінаристів і піддияконів Свято-Софійської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії. Хор під керівництвом д-ра Михайла Андреця молитовно проголошував піснеспів: «Христос воскрес із мертвих, смертю смерть подолав, і тим, що в гробах, життя дарував!»

Пасхальне богослужіння розпочалося з Північного Богослужіння біля Плащениці - моменту, коли Церква стоїть на межі між смертю і життям, між відчаєм і надією. У молитві, що лунала в стінах Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника св. Андрія Первозванного, вірні духовно переживали тайну перебування Христа у гробі.

Як зазначив у своїй проповіді Архієпископ Даниїл: «У тиші гробу світ очікував свого оновлення. Бо Христос увійшов у смерть не як її жертва, а як її Переможець. Гріб став лоном вічності, а Хрест - престолом Божественної любові».

З богословської точки зору, Пасха - це не лише спомин історичної події, але звершення всієї Божественної економії спасіння. Як навчає святитель Афанасій Великий: «Син Божий став людиною, щоб людина стала причасником Божественного життя».

Хрест Христовий - не знак поразки, а вісь спасіння, місце примирення неба і землі. Святитель Іоан Золотоустий у Пасхальному слові проголошує: «Пекло прийняло тіло - і зустріло Бога; прийняло землю - і зітнулося з небом».

Під час Пасхальної Утрені та Божественної Літургії, звершених в Українській Православній Церкві-пам’ятнику св. Андрія Первозванного, Архієпископ Даниїл проголосив Євангеліє різними мовами, засвідчуючи вселенський характер Доброї Новини Христової.

Ця традиція має глибоке богословське значення: Воскресіння Христове звернене до всього людства. Як говорить святитель Кирило Єрусалимський: «Воскресіння є спільним святом усього творіння, оновленням світу і відновленням людства».

У цей момент Церква явила себе як Єдина, Свята, Соборна і Апостольська, що перевищує межі часу і простору.

Сотні вірних зібралися на молитву в Українській Православній Церкві-пам’ятнику св. Андрія Первозванного - діти поруч із батьками, старші разом зі своїми родинами - всі єдиним серцем проголошували: «Христос Воскрес!»

Це зібрання стало живою іконою Царства Божого. Як наголосив Архієпископ Даниїл: «Святкувати Пасху - це не лише згадувати, але ставати. Ми покликані стати людьми Воскресіння, життя яких свідчить про перемогу Христа над гріхом, страхом і смертю».

Ранкова Велика Вечірня, звершена в тому ж святому храмі - в Українській Православній Церкві-пам’ятнику св. Андрія Первозванного - продовжила радість Пасхи як безперервну духовну реальність.

Після Божественної Літургії на подвір’ї Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника св. Андрія Первозванного вірні принесли свої пасхальні кошики для освячення - давню українську традицію, наповнену глибоким духовним змістом.

Кожен елемент кошика свідчить про Пасхальну істину: Паска - Христос, Хліб Життя; Яйця - символ нового життя і Воскресіння; М’ясні та молочні страви - радість завершення посту; Сіль - покликання бути «сіллю землі»; Хрін - гіркота страждань, що преображується Воскресінням.

У благословенні цих дарів освячується не лише їжа, але все життя вірних Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника св. Андрія Первозванного, покликане стати причасником Пасхальної радості.

Пасха є основою християнського життя. Як навчає святитель Григорій Богослов: «Вчора я розпинався з Тобою, Христе; сьогодні воскресаю з Тобою».

У Воскресінні Христос не просто повертається до життя - Він преображає саме життя, відкриваючи шлях до вічності.

Звертаючись до духовенства і вірних Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника св. Андрія Первозванного, Архієпископ Даниїл зазначив: «Улюблені у Господі, не залишаймо Пасху лише в стінах храму. Несіть світло Воскресіння у світ - у свої доми, у свої громади, навіть у темряву. Бо Христос Воскрес - і в Ньому все стає новим».

Коли дзвони лунали над Духовним Центром, а вірні виходили з Української Православної Церкви-пам’ятника св. Андрія Первозванного, несучи у серцях світло віри і радості, одна істина звучала понад усе: Христос воскрес із мертвих, смертю смерть подолав, і тим, що в гробах, життя дарував!
