In the sacred season of Saint Philip’s Fast, when Christian hearts throughout the world prepare to welcome the Christ-Child, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA once again embraced one of the holiest callings entrusted to humanity: to bring tenderness, dignity, and joy to the most vulnerable children of Ukraine - those who suffer, who are infirm, who live with disabilities, and whose mobility is limited.

For these precious children - fragile, resilient, and often forgotten - the Feast of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker becomes not merely a festive day, but a miracle of light shining in a world overshadowed by war, loss, and displacement.

Across the centuries, Saint Nicholas has been known as the defender of the weak, the protector of children, the rescuer of the oppressed, and the bearer of gifts that heal both heart and body. His life, deeply rooted in the Gospel, teaches that charity is not seasonal - it is the ongoing revelation of God’s mercy through human hands.

Saint Nicholas offered his gifts quietly, joyfully, and without expectation - anonymously sliding gold coins into the shoes of the poor, saving children from hunger, and ensuring that no soul felt abandoned. His actions were not mere gestures; they were acts of divine tenderness, the continuation of Christ’s own love for the little ones.

Today, in the midst of Ukraine’s suffering, that same spirit of Saint Nicholas lives on.

Inspired by the saint’s legacy, the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA have undertaken a monumental effort: to bring Christmas joy to up to 3,000 children living in orphanages, rehabilitation centers, and homes for those with profound disabilities across Ukraine - especially in the war-torn Donetsk region.

This sacred mission became possible through the tireless ministry of Rev. Fr. Serhii Kramarenko, pastor of several communities of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in the Donbas, who coordinates the local outreach and personally delivers the gifts.

Standing among children in wheelchairs, hugging those unable to speak or move freely, holding the hands of those who tremble from illness, Fr. Serhii expressed the simplest and deepest truth: “Every child who suffers becomes the very icon of Christ. When we touch them with love, we touch Christ Himself.”

Through his dedication, the parishioners of the UOC of the USA have become, in his words, “the living hands of Saint Nicholas” - reaching across oceans, borders, and battle lines to embrace the little ones of Christ with tenderness.

The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine remains one of the most heartbreaking of our time. Nearly 20,000 children have been forcibly taken from Ukraine by the Russian Federation, torn from their families, their homes, and their sense of safety.

Amid this profound wound, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has dared to do what Saint Nicholas himself would do: bring joy where there is sorrow, light where there is darkness, and love where there is abandonment.

Speaking on behalf of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Archbishop Daniel reflected upon this ministry with pastoral gravity: “We cannot return every child who has been stolen.

But through our gentle hands and open hearts, we can restore a piece of their childhood - a moment of joy, dignity, and love. This is the Gospel. This is Christ’s command.”- Archbishop Daniel

These words became the guiding star of the mission: to restore, even briefly, a sense of normalitybelonging, and celebration to children whose lives have known far too much fear.

The boxes prepared for each child contain not only toys, warm clothing, hygiene items, and treats, but something far more precious - hope.

For a child who cannot walk, a soft toy becomes a companion. For a child who cannot speak, a warm blanket becomes reassurance. For a child who has never received a gift, the package becomes a miracle.

But greater still is the spiritual reality behind every box: Each parcel is a message from the Body of Christ: “You are not forgotten. You are loved.”

The Church teaches that true giving is not about what we place into someone’s hands, but what we pour out of our hearts. Saint Nicholas himself reminds us that we must not offer gifts only to our friends, families, and those who can repay our affection.

We are called to give ourselves to the lonely, the suffering, the disabled, and those who have no one else. This is the essence of Christlike love.

As Fr. Serhii and his volunteers distribute the gifts across hospitals, orphanages, and special-care facilities, children’s faces fill with light - some with smiles, others with tears of joy, still others with an uplifted gaze that speaks louder than words.

Their joy sanctifies the season. Their innocence humbles every adult who witnesses it. Their vulnerability reveals the very heart of God.

Through the generosity of the faithful of the UOC of the USA, thousands of children in Ukraine - abandoned, disabled, displaced, or suffering - will know that love still lives, hope still breathes, and Christ still enters the world through human hearts.

As the world prepares to welcome the Nativity of Christ, one truth becomes clear: We are never more like God than when we give.

Saint Nicholas taught this. Christ embodied this. And today, the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA are living this truth in the most radiant way.

So let this sacred mission be a reminder to all: “We ourselves must become the gifts. Our hands must become the miracles. Our love must become someone’s answered prayer.

For when we give to a suffering child, we give directly to Christ. And in doing so, we transform the world - one small, holy act of love at a time.
