South Bound Brook, NJ – The sacred Chapel of the Three Holy Hierarchs at St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, the spiritual heart of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, was filled with radiant prayer and profound thanksgiving as the faithful gathered to honor the 40th anniversary of the episcopal consecration of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, our beloved Prime Hierarch.

Surrounded by clergy from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, joined by seminarians, faculty, Consistory staff, and laity, the Divine Liturgy unfolded as a tapestry of faith, memory, and hope. Standing beside Metropolitan Antony at the holy altar was His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, together with the brother clergy who have shared the journey of service and sacrifice with their archpastor.

The seminary choir, composed of students of St. Sophia Seminary, lifted their voices in responses that drew upon the ancient tones of the Kyiv Chant, filling the chapel with sacred beauty. Each prayer, each hymn, each moment bore witness to the deep love of the Church for her shepherd, and the unwavering love of the shepherd for his flock.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel addressed Metropolitan Antony with moving words, reminding all gathered of the two great figures who shaped the path of our hierarch.

First, he recalled Metropolitan John Theodorovich, the founding Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, who in the 1970s inspired a young John Scharba to consider seminary studies and service in the life of the Church. It was through Metropolitan John’s encouragement that the seed of vocation took root.

Second, Archbishop Daniel spoke of Dorothy Scharba, the Metropolitan’s beloved mother, who nurtured her son in the faith, supported him in the struggles of priestly life, and stood beside him through the joys and burdens of archpastoral ministry. Now reposed in the Lord and laid to rest at St. Andrew Cemetery in South Bound Brook, she continues to watch over her son’s ministry from the Kingdom of God.

These two pillars – a founding hierarch and a faithful mother – frame the forty-year journey of Metropolitan Antony, a journey marked by sacrifice, perseverance, and profound dedication to Christ’s Church.

Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, Dean of Students at the Seminary, spoke on behalf of the clergy, expressing heartfelt gratitude for Metropolitan Antony’s steadfast example and tireless devotion. Fr. Vasyl reflected on these four decades of service, reminding those gathered that forty is no ordinary number. It is the biblical measure of trial and fulfillment: Israel wandered forty years before reaching the Promised Land; the Lord fasted forty days before His ministry began.

So too, Metropolitan Antony has journeyed forty years in the episcopacy, ministering to generations of faithful. From the earliest youth encampments that shaped the spiritual life of children and teenagers, to the pastoral care of parishes across the nation, to the leadership of the Consistory and the academic formation of clergy at St. Sophia Seminary – his ministry has embraced the whole Church.

Seminarians offered words of appreciation and presented flowers to their archpastor, while Mykhaylo Stasiv, a seminarian, offered words of gratitude that captured the sentiments of the younger generation preparing to follow in the footsteps of service.

In his own response, Metropolitan Antony stood with humility, offering thanks to God and to the gathered faithful. He reflected on the forty-year journey as a pilgrimage with the people of God, recalling moments of joy, of trial, of growth, and of grace. He likened his path to that of Israel’s wandering – guided by God’s providence, sustained by the manna of divine mercy, and always moving toward the promise of Christ’s Kingdom.

“I give thanks,” he said, “for every soul I have been blessed to encounter in these years, every parish I have served, every youth camp where we sowed the seeds of faith, every hand that has labored with mine for the building up of Christ’s Church. These forty years are not mine, but ours – a testimony to what God accomplishes when His people walk together.”

The liturgical celebration flowed into a joyful luncheon, lovingly prepared by the seminary community. Chef Anna Krykh, Maria Morozovska, and Dobrodijka Valentina Vysotska, together with seminarians, offered a meal that was not merely food, but an extension of Eucharistic fellowship – the breaking of bread together as one family in Christ.

The celebration was not a closing chapter, but a new beginning. As the Church rejoiced in Metropolitan Antony’s forty years of episcopal service, it also looked with hope to the years yet to come – years of guidance, wisdom, and prayerful leadership from a hierarch who has given his life as a shepherd of souls.

The prayerful celebration of Metropolitan Antony’s 40th anniversary was not only a milestone of history, but a moment of profound spiritual renewal. It reminded the faithful that the Church is built upon lives of sacrifice, upon the prayers of mothers, upon the inspiration of past hierarchs, and above all, upon the grace of Christ who calls His servants to follow Him.

As sacred incense and hymns of thanksgiving rose to heaven, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA stood united in gratitude – for forty years of service, for a shepherd who continues to walk with his flock, and for the timeless promise that the Lord Himself is the true Shepherd who leads His people from generation to generation.

May God grant His Eminence Metropolitan Antony many blessed years – for the glory of God, for the strength of the Church, and for the salvation of His people.

Вінець сорока років: Молитовне святкування архіпастирської хіротонії Митрополита Антонія

Саут-Баунд-Брук, Нью-Джерзі – Святиня каплиці Трьох Святителів при Українській Православній Богословській Семінарії св. Софії, духовного осередку Української Православної Церкви США, наповнилася сяйвом молитви та глибокої подяки, коли вірні зібралися, щоб вшанувати 40-ту річницю єпископської хіротонії Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля УПЦ США.

Оточений духовенством із Нью-Йорка, Нью-Джерзі та Пенсильванії, разом із семінаристами, викладачами, співробітниками Консисторії та вірними, Митрополит Антоній звершив Божественну Літургію – і вона розгорнулася як полотно віри, пам’яті й надії. Біля святого престолу разом із Владикою стояв Архієпископ Даниїл, у співслужінні з братією духовенства, які протягом десятиліть розділяли шлях служіння і жертовності зі своїм архіпастирем.

Семінарський хор, сформований зі студентів Семінарії св. Софії, підніс свої голоси в богослужбових співах, натхненних давніми наспівами київської традиції, наповнюючи каплицю сакральною красою. Кожна молитва, кожен спів, кожна мить свідчили про глибоку любов Церкви до свого пастиря та незмінну любов пастиря до своєї пастви.

Після завершення Божественної Літургії Архієпископ Даниїл звернувся до Митрополита Антонія з глибокими словами, нагадавши всім присутнім про двох великих осіб, які сформували шлях нашого ієрарха.

Першим він згадав Митрополита Іоана Теодоровича, засновника Української Православної Церкви США, який у 1970-х роках надихнув молодого Івана Щербу розглянути можливість вступу до семінарії та посвяти свого життя служінню Церкві. Саме завдяки заохоченню Митрополита Іоана проросло зерно покликання.

Другим, про кого згадав Архієпископ, була Доротея Щерба, улюблена мати Митрополита, яка виховувала сина у вірі, підтримувала його у випробуваннях священичого життя та залишалася поруч у радощах і тягарях архіпастирського служіння. Відійшовши до Господа та спочивши на кладовищі св. Андрія в Саут-Баунд-Бруку, вона й далі духовно супроводжує служіння свого сина з Царства Божого.

Ці два стовпи – засновник-ієрарх і вірна мати – окреслили сорокарічний шлях Митрополита Антонія, шлях, позначений жертвою, витривалістю та глибокою відданістю Христовій Церкві.

Протоієрей Василь Пасакас, декан студентів семінарії, виступив від імені духовенства, висловивши щиру вдячність за непохитний приклад і невтомну відданість Митрополита Антонія. Він нагадав, що число сорок у Святому Письмі має особливе значення: воно є мірою випробування і звершення. Ізраїль сорок років мандрував пустелею, перш ніж увійти до Обітованої землі; Господь сорок днів постив перед початком Своєї місії.

Так само й Митрополит Антоній пройшов сорок років архіпастирського служіння, опікуючись поколіннями вірних. Від перших молодіжних таборів, які формували духовне життя дітей і юнацтва, до пастирської опіки парафіями по всій країні, до керівництва Консисторією та богословської формації майбутніх священнослужителів у Семінарії св. Софії – його служіння охопило всю Церкву.

Семінаристи піднесли слова вдячності й подарували квіти своєму архіпастирю. А семінарист Михайло Стасівпромовив слова подяки, яка віддзеркалила почуття молодшого покоління, готового йти дорогою служіння.

У своїй відповіді Митрополит Антоній зі смиренням подякував Богові та всім присутнім. Він згадав свій сорокарічний шлях як паломництво разом із Божим народом – шлях радостей і випробувань, зростання і благодаті. Порівняв свою подорож із мандрами Ізраїлю – проваджену Божим промислом, підтримувану манною Божого милосердя, завжди спрямовану до обітниці Христового Царства.

«Я дякую, – сказав він, – за кожну душу, яку Господь благословив мене зустріти в ці роки, за кожну парафію, яку мав честь служити, за кожен молодіжний табір, де ми сіяли зерна віри, за кожну руку, яка трудилася разом зі мною для розбудови Христової Церкви. Ці сорок років – не мої, а наші. Це свідчення того, що Бог звершує, коли Його люди йдуть разом».

Богослужбове торжество завершилося святковим обідом, приготованим із любов’ю семінарською спільнотою. Кухар Анна Крих, Марія Морозовська та добродійка Валентина Висоцька разом із семінаристами піднесли страви, які були не просто їжею, а продовженням євхаристійного спілкування – ламанням хліба в єдиній Христовій родині.

Це святкування стало не закриттям сторінки, а початком нового розділу. Радіючи сорока рокам архіпастирського служіння Митрополита Антонія, Церква з надією дивиться в майбутнє – на роки, сповнені духовного проводу, мудрості й молитви ієрарха, який віддав життя як пастир душ.

Молитовне святкування 40-річчя стало не лише історичною віхою, а й моментом глибокого духовного оновлення. Воно нагадало вірним, що Церква збудована на жертві, на молитвах матерів, на натхненні ієрархів минулого, а понад усе – на благодаті Христа, Який кличе Своїх слуг іти за Ним.

Коли підносився фіміам і лунали піснеспіви подяки, Українська Православна Церква США стояла єдиною у вдячності – за сорок років служіння, за пастиря, який продовжує йти поруч зі своєю паствою, і за вічну обітницю, що Сам Господь є справжнім Пастирем, Який веде Свій народ від покоління до покоління.

Нехай Господь дарує Його Високопреосвященству Митрополиту Антонію многая і благая літа – на славу Божу, на зміцнення Церкви та на спасіння Його народу.
