Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Manhattan Celebrates Pentecost

V. Rev. Fr. Todor Mazur, Parish Priest and the faithful of his Cathedral Parish of Holy Trinity in Manhattan (China Town), New York City celebrated the cathedral Feast Day of Pentecost by welcoming His Eminence Metropolitan Antony to lead them in glorifying and expressing great gratitude to God Almighty in the Holy Trinity for the blessings bestowed upon them.  The Metropolitan expressed his great joy he experiences each time he prays with this thriving and generous parish family.  Here he experiences dedication and devotion to God, the love of each member for his or her brothers and sisters and a powerful desire to share of their life, love and treasure beyond the four walls of their church – in particular assistance to the people of Ukraine suffering through another genocide inflicted upon them.

His Eminence was welcomed to the Church by Melania Maxymyshyn presenting a beautiful bouquet of flowers followed by her mother Natalia offering the traditional bread and salt to His Eminence as the honored visitor to his parish family.  Father Todor welcomed the Metropolitan in behalf of all the clergy present and the faithful parish membership beseeching the abundant blessings of the Holy Trinity upon his important work in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ as First Hierarch of our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and Diaspora.  Metropolitan Antony expressed his deep gratitude for such a warm welcome and urged all present to join him in liturgical prayers for the parish family and most especially for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, presently suffering the horrors of yet another genocide against the Ukrainian Nation and her people.  The clergy joining in the prayers were V. Rev. Jon Protaesa, pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Jamaica Queens, V. Rev. Yurij Pidhurskyi serving at St. Volodymyr Cathedral, New York City and Deacon Adrian Mazur, son of Fr. Todor. Seminarians Subdeacon Yurij Izhyk and Bohdan Motychak led a wonderful group of eight altar servers in assisting the Metropolitan throughout the Divine Liturgy.  Other seminarians, including Subdeacon Andriy Akulenko, Marian Meleshko, Bohdan Bodnar and Michael Stasiv joined with the parish Choir, the members of which Metropolitan Antony loving thanked and praised at the conclusion of the Liturgy, saying that his prayer is that God will always bless them to continue praising him with the most magnificent musical instruments in history – the human voice.

During his sermon, His Eminence spoke of the Grace of the Holy Trinity imparted to each of those present. We must allow the Grace of the Holy Spirit – the Grace we all received at our Baptism and Chrismation and each time we participate in any of the Holy Mysteries – to work in our lives!  We must trust in God - the Holy Trinity - to care for us, to lead our lives and to enable us to make choices in life that will lead us closer to becoming one in thought, word and deed with God.  This must be a conscious effort on our part, every moment of our lives, rather than for just the duration of Divine Liturgy on a Sunday morning.”  He referred to many Saints – our forefathers throughout the history of Ukraine from the Passion Bearers, Martyrs Borys and Khlib through all those martyred during the occupation of Ukraine by several foreign powers, the most horrific of which was the Communist regime.  They literally exuded the Grace of God and by the example of their devotion to Christ our Lord, the enemy was vanquished, and Ukraine has emerged as a powerful, independent nation with an Autocephalous Church, which will hopefully become the conscience of the nation.

Following Divine Liturgy, the clergy and worshippers gathered in the parish social center for an incredible (as always) agape feast in honor of the Metropolitan.  A highlight of the day’s program was the presentation of “Hramoty” “Testaments of Blessings” to several people, as can be seen in the pictures accompanying this article.  They were honored at the request of Fr. Todor and the Parish Board of Administration for their deep dedication and support of every aspect of parish life and his Eminence was overjoyed with the opportunity to lift these individuals up as examples for others to follow.  They were Ruslan and Natalia Maksymyshyn, Ihor and Halyna Gebura, Lyudmyla Romaniuk, Natalia Lendel, Myroslav Prymak, Svitlana Krytsyak, Vasyl Dubych, Hryhorij Bobul and Serhiy and Olena Hoshowsky. A beautiful entertainment program was conducted by Hryhorij Bobul, who sang numerous Ukrainian songs with his powerful baritone voice and joyfully presented other entertainers including young children.
