"Take courage! It is I; do not be afraid." (Matthew 14:27)

The Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos Ukrainian Orthodox Mission in Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced a blessed and grace-filled day as His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, made an archpastoral visit to the growing mission community. The visit was dedicated not only to the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, but also to the annual pastoral review of the ministry, outreach, and development of the mission as it continues its faithful journey toward becoming a fully established parish of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

The visit reflected the Church's commitment to accompanying every parish community with pastoral guidance, prayerful support, and responsible stewardship as local missions mature into vibrant centers of Orthodox Christian life.

His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy together with the pastor of the mission, the Rev. Fr. Maksym Zhuravchyk, whose devoted pastoral ministry continues to nurture the spiritual growth of the faithful in the Charlotte region. The prayerful responses were beautifully offered by the parish choir under the direction of Maria Hreh, whose leadership helped elevate the worship of the Church through sacred hymnography.

Throughout the Divine Liturgy, numerous faithful approached the Holy Chalice to receive the Most Pure Body and Precious Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, offering a visible witness that the Eucharist remains the very heart of Orthodox Christian life. As St. Ignatius of Antioch reminds the Church, "Take care, then, to use one Eucharist, for there is one Flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ and one Cup unto unity in His Blood." Gathered around the Holy Altar, the faithful experienced once again that the Church is not merely an institution but the living Body of Christ, united through the Holy Mysteries.

Following the proclamation of the Holy Gospel from Matthew 14:24-33, recounting Christ's walking upon the waters and His saving of the Apostle Peter, Archbishop Daniel offered a deeply pastoral and inspiring reflection on the meaning of faith amid the storms of contemporary life.

"The storm was real," Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful. "The wind was strong. The waves were frightening. Yet the greatest danger was never the storm itself - it was taking our eyes away from Christ."

Reflecting upon the Apostle Peter's experience, His Eminence observed: "Peter did not begin to sink because Christ stopped holding him. He began to sink because fear became greater than faith. Every time we allow fear, anxiety, anger, or despair to occupy our hearts more than Christ Himself, we begin to sink spiritually. But the Lord never ceases extending His hand toward us."

Archbishop Daniel encouraged the faithful to recognize that every generation encounters its own storms. While previous generations endured wars, persecution, and displacement, today's faithful must also navigate the powerful currents of secularism, social media, digital communication, and rapidly changing cultural realities.

Recalling his participation only days earlier in the 79th Annual Convention of the Ukrainian Orthodox League, His Eminence reflected upon presentations devoted to the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence, social media, and the digital world in the life and ministry of the Church.

"The digital world is not our enemy," he said. "It is simply another sea upon which Christ calls His disciples to walk with faith. The question is not whether technology exists; the question is whether we allow it to bring us closer to Christ or farther away from Him."

Drawing upon the example of the Savior Himself, Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful that Christ always employed the language, imagery, and means that people understood.

"Our Lord was remarkably innovative in His ministry. He preached from fishing boats because people gathered along the shore. He taught using seeds, vineyards, fishermen, merchants, shepherds, and families because these were the realities people understood. Christ entered the world of those He wished to save without ever compromising the eternal truth of the Gospel."

"The Church," His Eminence continued, "must likewise bring the unchanging Gospel into the language of every generation. We never change the Truth - but we continually seek new ways of proclaiming the Truth. Every tool, every technology, every opportunity can become an instrument of evangelization when Christ remains at the center."

Quoting the words of Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful: "Nothing is colder than a Christian who does not seek the salvation of others."

He further encouraged the community: "Keep your eyes fixed upon Christ. If your gaze remains upon Him, no storm will overcome you. The world will continue to change, but Jesus Christ remains 'the same yesterday, today, and forever' (Hebrews 13:8). Our mission is not to fear the changing world but to sanctify it through the light of the Gospel."

Following the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel presided over the Extraordinary General Parish Meeting, convened to review the progress of the mission during the past year and to establish priorities for its continued development.

The meeting focused upon strengthening parish administration, expanding ministries, encouraging stewardship, and preparing the community for the next stage of its canonical and organizational growth as it gradually moves toward full parish status within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

During the meeting, a new Parish Board of Administration was appointed to assist in the responsible governance of the growing mission community. His Eminence expressed his confidence that the newly appointed leadership would work collaboratively with the pastor and faithful to continue building a vibrant parish rooted in prayer, sacramental life, stewardship, education, and missionary outreach.

Archbishop Daniel expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Rev. Fr. Maksym Zhuravchyk for his faithful pastoral leadership, tireless missionary spirit, and loving care for the growing flock entrusted to him.

"The true measure of a mission," His Eminence noted, "is not found merely in numbers, but in transformed lives. Every soul that discovers Christ, every child who learns to pray, every family strengthened through the Church, every neighbor welcomed with love becomes another living stone in God's spiritual temple."

Words of appreciation were likewise offered to the Acting President of the Parish Board of Administration, Mr. Andrii Greh, together with all members of the parish leadership, whose generosity, dedication, and willingness to serve continue to strengthen the life of the mission.

The discussions concluded with a shared vision for the future: continued outreach to newly arrived Ukrainian families, expansion of educational and charitable ministries, greater involvement of young adults and children, and the steady development of parish life that will, God willing, culminate in the mission's full establishment as a parish of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

As the faithful gathered for fellowship following the meeting, there was a palpable sense of gratitude, hope, and renewed commitment. The visit of the ruling hierarch served not only as an administrative review but, more importantly, as a visible reminder that the Church journeys together - bishop, clergy, and faithful - united in Christ.

Leaving Charlotte, Archbishop Daniel offered his archpastoral blessing with words that beautifully summarized the day's message:

"Every flourishing parish begins as a mission. Every mission begins with faith. When a community keeps its eyes upon Christ, walks together in love, and remains faithful to the Holy Gospel, the Lord Himself builds His Church. May the Most Holy Theotokos, whose Annunciation we celebrate, continue to protect this beloved mission, strengthen its faithful, guide its leadership, and lead it toward an even brighter future for the glory of God and the salvation of His people."

"Підбадьоріться! Це Я, не бійтеся!" (Мф. 14:27)

Українська Православна місія Благовіщення Пресвятої Богородиці в Шарлотті, штат Північна Кароліна, пережила благословенний день, приймаючи архіпастирський візит Високопреосвященнішого Архієпископа Даниїла, правлячого архієрея Західної єпархії Української Православної Церкви США. Метою візиту стало не лише звершення Божественної літургії, але й щорічний архіпастирський огляд служіння, місіонерської праці та розвитку місійної громади, яка поступово зростає й готується у майбутньому стати повноправною парафією Української Православної Церкви США.

Цей архіпастирський візит засвідчив постійну турботу Церкви про свої місійні громади, супроводжуючи їх молитвою, духовною опікою та відповідальним керівництвом на шляху до зрілого парафіяльного життя.

Божественну літургію Архієпископ Даниїл звершив у співслужінні з настоятелем місії о. Максимом Журавчиком, пастирське служіння якого надає духовну опіку українській православній громаді околиці Шарлотта. Молитовний спів богослужіння натхненно виконав парафіяльний хор під керівництвом пані Марії Грег, допомагаючи всім присутнім духовно відчути красу православного богослужіння.

Особливо зворушливим свідченням живої віри стало те, що численні вірні приступили до Святого Причастя, приймаючи Пречисті Тіло і Кров Господа нашого Ісуса Христа. Саме Євхаристія залишається серцем життя Церкви, джерелом її єдності та сили. Як навчав святий Ігнатій Богоносець: «Старайтесь брати участь в одній Євхаристії, бо одне є Тіло Господа нашого Ісуса Христа і одна Чаша в єднання Його Крові.»

Після читання Святого Євангелія від Матфея (14:24-33), яке розповідає про ходіння Господа по воді та спасіння апостола Петра, Архієпископ Даниїл звернувся до присутніх із натхненною архіпастирською проповіддю.

«Буря була справжньою, - наголосив Архієпископ. - Вітер був сильний. Хвилі були високими. Але найбільшою небезпекою була не сама буря, а те, що людина перестає дивитися на Христа.»

Роздумуючи над постаттю святого апостола Петра, Владика зазначив: «Петро почав тонути не тому, що Христос перестав його підтримувати. Він почав тонути тоді, коли страх став більшим за віру. Щоразу, коли страх, тривога, гнів чи розпач займають у нашому серці більше місця, ніж Христос, ми починаємо духовно занурюватися. Але Господь ніколи не перестає простягати нам Свою спасаючу руку.»

Архієпископ підкреслив, що кожне покоління має свої випробування. Якщо попередні покоління переживали війни, переслідування та вимушене переселення, то сучасні християни покликані навчитися жити серед викликів цифрової епохи, соціальних мереж, штучного інтелекту та швидких суспільних змін.

Згадуючи свою участь у 79-й Річній Конвенції Української Православної Ліги, яка відбулася лише кількома днями раніше, Архієпископ Даниїл розповів про презентації, присвячені використанню цифрового світу, соціальних мереж та сучасних технологій у церковному служінні.

«Цифровий світ - не наш ворог, - сказав Владика. - Це лише ще одне море, по якому Христос закликає Своїх учнів іти з вірою. Питання не в тому, чи існують технології. Питання в тому, чи використовуємо ми їх для того, щоб наближати людей до Христа, чи дозволяємо їм віддаляти нас від Нього.»

Архієпископ звернув увагу на те, що Сам Господь Ісус Христос був найдосконалішим прикладом місіонерського служіння.

«Господь завжди промовляв мовою, яку розуміли люди. Він навчав із човна, бо народ стояв на березі. Він говорив про сівача, рибалок, виноградники, пастухів, купців і сім'ї, бо саме таким було життя Його слухачів. Христос входив у світ людей, щоб привести їх до Царства Божого, але ніколи не змінював істину Євангелія.»

Продовжуючи думку, Владика зазначив: «Церква покликана незмінну Істину Христову проголошувати мовою кожного покоління. Ми ніколи не змінюємо Євангеліє, але постійно шукаємо нові можливості донести його до людських сердець. Кожен сучасний засіб може стати інструментом благовістя, якщо в центрі залишається Христос.»

Цитуючи святителя Іоана Золотоустого, Архієпископ нагадав: «Немає нічого холоднішого за християнина, який не дбає про спасіння інших.»

На завершення проповіді Архієпископ Даниїл закликав: «Не зводьте свого погляду з Христа. Якщо ваші очі звернені до Нього, жодна буря не здолає вас. Світ буде змінюватися, але Христос - Той Самий учора, сьогодні і навіки. Наше покликання - не боятися змін, а освячувати світ світлом Євангелія.»

Після завершення Божественної літургії Архієпископ Даниїл очолив Надзвичайні Загальні Парафіяльні Збори, присвячені аналізу діяльності місії за минулий рік та визначенню основних напрямків її подальшого розвитку.

Під час зборів було обговорено питання зміцнення парафіяльного управління, розвитку місіонерського служіння, катехизації, молодіжної праці, благодійних проєктів та фінансової відповідальності. Особливу увагу було приділено поступовому переходу місії до повноцінного статусу парафії Української Православної Церкви США.

За благословенням Архієпископа було призначено новий склад Парафіяльної Управи, яка покликана у співпраці з настоятелем забезпечувати подальший розвиток громади.

Високопреосвященніший Архієпископ Даниїл висловив щиру вдячність настоятелю місії, о. Максиму Журавчику, за його пастирське служіння, місіонерську ревність, любов до людей та вірність покликанню.

«Справжній успіх місії, - зазначив Архієпископ, - вимірюється не кількістю людей, а преображенням людських сердець. Кожна людина, яка знаходить Христа, кожна дитина, яка вчиться молитися, кожна сім'я, яка зміцнюється в Церкві, стає живим каменем духовного храму Божого.»

Окремі слова вдячності були адресовані виконувачу обов'язків голови Парафіяльної Управи пану Андрію Греху, а також усім членам новопризначеної управи, які з готовністю прийняли відповідальність за подальший розвиток місії.

Під час братнього обговорення були визначені плани майбутнього розвитку громади: активізація праці серед новоприбулих українських родин, розширення освітніх програм, посилення молодіжного служіння, підтримка дітей та сімей, а також поступова підготовка місії до набуття повного парафіяльного статусу в складі Української Православної Церкви США.

Архіпастирський візит завершився у дусі вдячності, духовного піднесення та братньої єдності. Він став не лише адміністративним оглядом життя громади, але насамперед нагадуванням, що Церква живе тоді, коли єпископ, духовенство і миряни разом дивляться на Христа, довіряють Йому та спільно несуть служіння Євангелія.

Покидаючи Шарлотту, Архієпископ Даниїл благословив громаду словами, які стали підсумком усього дня: «Кожна сильна парафія колись була місією. Кожна місія починається з віри. Якщо громада не зводить очей із Христа, живе в любові та зберігає вірність Святому Євангелію, Сам Господь будує Свою Церкву. Нехай Пресвята Богородиця, Благовіщення Якої присвячена ця місія, покриває її Своїм чесним омофором, зміцнює її пастиря, благословляє нову парафіяльну управу і веде всю громаду до духовного зростання, щоб вона приносила рясні плоди на славу Божу та для спасіння людських душ.»
