As the dawn of Holy and Great Wednesday gently illumined the sacred grounds of the Spiritual Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, the faithful gathered at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church to enter more deeply into the solemn mystery of repentance, betrayal, and divine mercy.

His Eminence Archbishop Daniel presided over the final celebration of the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts for this year - a service that, throughout the Great Fast, has nourished the faithful with the Eucharistic presence of Christ in a spirit of compunction and quiet longing. Concelebrating with His Eminence were Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of the parish; Rev. Fr. Pavlo Vysotskyi; and Deacon Andriy Akulenko, while the prayerful chanting of the seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary lifted hearts heavenward.

This final Presanctified Liturgy, offered in the stillness of the Lenten journey’s culmination, bore a particular spiritual weight - inviting the faithful to stand at the threshold of the Passion of Christ, having been purified through prayer, fasting, and repentance.

Following the proclamation of the Holy Gospel, Archbishop Daniel offered a profound reflection on the central theme of Holy Wednesday: the stark contrast between the repentant woman and Judas Iscariot.

With spiritual clarity, His Eminence reminded the faithful: “On this sacred day, the Church places before us two paths - one of repentance that leads to life, and one of hardened self-will that leads to spiritual destruction. Both stand before Christ. Only one chooses love.”

Reflecting upon the woman who anointed the Lord with precious myrrh, Archbishop Daniel emphasized that her act was not merely emotional, but deeply ontological - a transformation of the human heart returning to God.

St. Andrew of Crete teaches: “The tears of repentance are a second baptism, washing away the defilement of sin.”

Her offering of costly ointment became a sign of total self-offering - of a life once broken, now restored in love. As St. John Chrysostom writes: “She approached not as a sinner condemned, but as one who loved much - and therefore was forgiven much.”

In contrast, Judas - numbered among the Twelve, a witness to miracles, a participant in divine intimacy - chose betrayal. Archbishop Daniel reflected: “Judas was not far from Christ - he was near. Yet proximity without transformation becomes the tragedy of the soul.”

St. John Chrysostom warns: “Judas was not destroyed because he betrayed Christ, but because he despaired and refused repentance.”

Thus, Holy Wednesday becomes a mirror for every soul - a call to examine not only our actions, but the orientation of our hearts.

During the Liturgy, numerous faithful approached the Holy Chalice, receiving the Most Holy Eucharist - the Body and Blood of Christ -as strength for the journey ahead. In this sacred communion, the Church reminds her children that repentance is not an end, but a passage into restored unity with God.

The final chanting of the Lenten hymns by the seminarians marked a quiet yet powerful transition: the conclusion of the Presanctified Liturgies, and the entrance into the most solemn days of the Church year.

Later that evening, over one hundred faithful again gathered in the holy temple for the celebration of the Holy Mystery of Unction - a sacrament of healing, forgiveness, and restoration.

Presided over by Archbishop Daniel, and concelebrated by: Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas (St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church, South Bound Brook, NJ), Very Rev. Fr. Petro Levko (St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Yardville, NJ), Rev. Fr. Ivan Tchopko (Three Holy Hierarchs Seminary Chapel), Rev. Fr. Roman Marchyshak (Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Trenton, NJ), Rev. Fr. Pavlo Vysotskyi and Deacon Andriy Akulenko (St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church, South Bound Brook, NJ), the service unfolded with deep solemnity and grace.

The oil - blessed and mingled with wine - became a visible sign of God’s mercy. As the Gospel Book was held over the heads of the faithful, prayers were offered for healing, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal.

St. Basil the Great teaches: “The grace of the Spirit is given through visible signs, that the invisible healing of the soul may be made manifest.”

Archbishop Daniel, in his pastoral reflection, reminded all present: “The Church does not reject the means of physical healing given by God through medicine - but she never ceases to offer that which no physician can give: the healing of the soul, the forgiveness of sins, and the restoration of the human person in Christ.”

One by one, the faithful approached to be anointed - each carrying burdens, wounds, hopes, and prayers. In a moving final moment, the clergy themselves anointed Archbishop Daniel, expressing the unity of the Church in mutual love, humility, and intercession.

As the sacred services of Holy Wednesday drew to a close, a profound stillness descended upon the hearts of the faithful. The Church now leads her children into the deep mystery of Holy Thursday - the Mystical Supper, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, and the beginning of the Passion narratives.

In the words of Archbishop Daniel: “We now walk with Christ - not as spectators, but as participants. Let us not be like Judas, who stood near yet turned away - but like the repentant woman, who drew near and was transformed.”

Holy Wednesday is not merely remembered - it is lived.

It is the moment when each soul must choose: between love and indifference; between repentance and despair; between Christ and the many subtle betrayals of daily life.

As St. Ephraim the Syrian writes: “Open to me the doors of repentance, O Giver of Life.”

May the grace received through the Holy Eucharist and the anointing of Unction strengthen all the faithful to enter the sacred days ahead with humility, watchfulness, and love.

For from the tears of repentance is born the joy of the Resurrection.

Коли світанок Великої і Святої Середи лагідно освітив святі простори Духовного Осередку Митрополії Української Православної Церкви США у Саут-Баунд-Бруку, штат Нью-Джерсі, вірні зібралися в Українській Православній церкві-пам’ятнику Святого Андрія Первозванного, щоб глибше увійти у таємницю покаяння, зради та Божого милосердя. 

Його Високопреосвященство Архієпископ Даниїл очолив останнє цього року звершення Літургії Передосвячених Дарів - богослужіння, яке протягом усього Великого посту духовно живило вірних євхаристійною присутністю Христа у дусі сокрушення та тихого очікування. Співслужили з Владикою: протоієрей Василь Пасакас, настоятель парафії; о. Павло Висоцький та диякон Андрій Акуленко, тоді як молитовний спів семінаристів Свято-Софійської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії підносив серця до небес.

Ця остання Передосвячена Літургія, звершена у тиші завершення великопісного подвигу, мала особливу духовну глибину - вона запрошувала вірних стати на порозі Страстей Христових, очищеними молитвою, постом і покаянням.

Після читання Святого Євангелія Архієпископ Даниїл виголосив глибоке духовне слово про головну тему цього дня - різкий контраст між жінкою-грішницею, що покаялася, і Юдою Іскаріотом.

З духовною ясністю Владика звернувся до вірних: «У цей священний день Церква ставить перед нами два шляхи - шлях покаяння, що веде до життя, і шлях закам’янілої власної волі, що веде до духовної загибелі. Обидва стоять перед Христом. Але лише один обирає любов.»

Роздумуючи над жінкою, яка помазала Господа дорогоцінним миром, Архієпископ наголосив, що її вчинок був не просто емоційним поривом, а глибоким внутрішнім преображенням - поверненням людського серця до Бога.

Святий Андрей Критський навчає: «Сльози покаяння - це друге хрещення, що омиває скверну гріха.»

Її принесення дорогоцінного мира стало знаком повного самопожертвування - життя, яке було зранене гріхом, але відновлене любов’ю. Як пише святий Іоан Золотоустий: «Вона приступила не як засуджена грішниця, але як та, що багато полюбила - і тому їй багато простилося.»

Натомість Юда - один із Дванадцятьох, свідок чудес і учасник Божественної близькості - обрав шлях зради. Архієпископ Даниїл зауважив: «Юда не був далеко від Христа - він був поруч. Але близькість без внутрішнього преображення стає трагедією душі.»

Святий Іоан Золотоустий застерігає: «Юда загинув не тому, що зрадив Христа, а тому, що впав у відчай і відкинув покаяння.»

Так Велика Середа стає дзеркалом для кожної душі - закликом дослідити не лише наші вчинки, але й спрямування нашого серця.

Під час Літургії численні вірні приступили до Святої Чаші, приймаючи Пречисті Тіло і Кров Христові як духовну силу для подальшого шляху. У цьому святому причасті Церква нагадує, що покаяння - це не кінець, а початок відновленої єдності з Богом.

Завершальний спів великопісних піснеспівів у виконанні семінаристів став тихим, але глибоким переходом - завершенням Літургій Передосвячених Дарів і входженням у найсвятіші дні церковного року.

Пізніше того ж вечора понад сто вірних знову зібралися у храмі для звершення Святого Таїнства Єлеопомазання - таїнства зцілення, прощення і духовного відновлення.

Очолюване Архієпископом Даниїлом і співслужене духовенством, богослужіння відбувалося у глибокій молитовній атмосфері.

Освячений єлей, змішаний з вином, став видимим знаком Божого милосердя. Коли Святе Євангеліє тримали над головами вірних, підносилися молитви за зцілення душі і тіла, прощення гріхів і духовне оновлення.

Святий Василій Великий навчає: «Благодать Святого Духа подається через видимі знаки, щоб невидиме зцілення душі стало явним.»

Архієпископ Даниїл у своєму повчанні наголосив: «Церква не відкидає тілесних засобів лікування, дарованих Богом через медицину, але вона ніколи не перестає подавати те, чого не може дати жоден лікар - зцілення душі, прощення гріхів і відновлення людини у Христі.»

Один за одним вірні підходили до помазання, приносячи свої болі, надії та молитви. У зворушливий момент наприкінці служби духовенство помазало самого Архієпископа Даниїла, являючи єдність Церкви у взаємній любові, смиренні та молитві.

Після завершення богослужінь Великої Середи глибока тиша огорнула серця вірних. Церква веде своїх дітей до таємниці Великого Четверга - Тайної Вечері, встановлення Святої Євхаристії та початку Страсних подій.

Як зазначив Архієпископ Даниїл: «Ми йдемо разом із Христом - не як спостерігачі, але як учасники. Не будьмо як Юда, який був поруч, але відвернувся - будьмо як жінка, що наблизилася і була преображена.»

Велика Середа - це не лише спомин. Це життя.

Це мить, коли кожна душа має зробити вибір: між любов’ю і байдужістю, між покаянням і відчаєм, між Христом і тонкими зрадами щоденного життя.

Як пише святий Єфрем Сирін: «Відчини мені двері покаяння, Життєдавче.»

Нехай благодать, отримана через Святу Євхаристію та помазання святим єлеєм, укріпить усіх вірних, щоб увійти у наступні святі дні зі смиренням, духовною пильністю і любов’ю.

Бо зі сліз покаяння народжується радість Воскресіння.
