With profound joy, spiritual anticipation, and hearts uplifted toward the heavenly Jerusalem, the faithful of Saint Panteleimon Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, New York, gathered in extraordinary numbers to celebrate the bright and triumphant Feast of the Entrance of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ into Jerusalem - Palm Sunday, the sacred threshold that leads the Church into the solemn and salvific journey of the Great and Holy Week.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel prayerfully traveled from the Spiritual Center of the Church in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, to Brooklyn, New York, in order to lead the faithful in the liturgical celebration of this great feast. His arrival was not merely a hierarchical visit - it was a moment of encounter, a living icon of the shepherd coming among his flock to guide them into the mystery of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection.

Despite the rain that gently fell upon the city that day, over 500 faithful gathered within the sacred walls of the temple and the additional temporary chapel space, their presence bearing witness to the living faith of the Church - a faith that no storm can diminish, but only strengthens.

As Archbishop Daniel approached the holy temple, he was greeted with deep reverence and heartfelt joy. The children of the parish, radiant with innocence and clothed in festive attire, welcomed the Archpastor with flowers - becoming a living reflection of the children of Jerusalem who once ran before Christ, crying out: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!” Their presence was not symbolic alone - it was theological, reminding all that the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these (Matthew 19:14).

At the entrance of the church, the ancient and beautiful tradition of bread and salt was offered by Parish Board President Mr. Stepan Lutsak, signifying hospitality, love, and the offering of one’s very life to Christ and His Church. Pani Sonia Riashnivska, a devoted parishioner, presented a moving poem, weaving together themes of humility, victory, and the spiritual journey of the faithful. Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Shak, the pastor of the parish, greeted the Archbishop with the hand cross, offering words that resonated deeply within the hearts of all present: “Your Eminence, as Christ entered Jerusalem in humility and love, so today we welcome you into our spiritual home. Lead us, guide us, and strengthen us, that we may not only cry ‘Hosanna’ with our lips, but also proclaim it with our lives - through faith, sacrifice, and love.”

Entering the holy temple, Archbishop Daniel greeted the faithful with the festal proclamation, his voice filled with pastoral warmth and spiritual conviction: “Beloved in Christ, today the King of Glory enters not only the city of Jerusalem - but He stands at the gates of our hearts, desiring to enter, to dwell, and to transform.”

Before the beginning of the Divine Liturgy, a sacred and deeply moving moment unfolded as Seminarian Bohdan Motychak of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary was tonsured a Reader of the Holy Church. Recognizing his dedication to the liturgical life of the Church, his commitment to sacred theology, and his desire to serve Christ both in his studies and in his life, the Church affirmed his calling.

In this moment, the words of Saint Paul seemed to echo within the church: “Let all things be done decently and in order”(1 Corinthians 14:40), for the raising of new servants at the altar is always a sign of the living presence of the Holy Spirit within the Church.

The Divine Liturgy that followed was marked by prayerful attentiveness and spiritual depth. The choir and faithful lifted their voices in harmonious praise, while the clergy served with reverence, manifesting the unity of the Body of Christ.

Following the reading of the Holy Gospel, Archbishop Daniel delivered a sermon of profound theological depth and pastoral urgency - an invitation not merely to observe the feast, but to enter into its mystery:

“Palm Sunday is not a historical reenactment - it is a present reality. Christ enters Jerusalem today. The question before us is: will we allow Him to enter the Jerusalem of our soul?”

Reflecting on the palm branches held by the faithful, he offered a powerful spiritual insight: “The palm tree does not bear fruit quickly - it requires patience, growth, and time. Nearly thirty years must pass before it produces its fruit. So too, in the ancient tradition, a man reached maturity for priestly service at thirty. The palms we hold are not mere branches - they are a sign of spiritual maturity, of readiness to recognize Christ as the Messiah and to follow Him not only in moments of joy, but also on the path to the Cross.”

He continued, drawing the faithful into a deeper reflection: “The people of Jerusalem cried out, ‘Hosanna!’ - they recognized Christ as King. Yet, within days, many would turn away. Today, we must ask ourselves: is our faith rooted in emotion, or in commitment? Do we follow Christ only in triumph, or also in sacrifice?”

With particular emphasis, the Archbishop spoke of the garments laid before Christ: “When the people spread their garments before the Lord, they were offering not fabric - but their dignity, their identity, their very lives. Today, we are called to lay down before Christ everything that separates us from Him - our pride, our anger, our sins - so that He may reign within us as the King of our hearts.”

Calling the faithful to spiritual vigilance as they approached Holy Week, he proclaimed: “We stand now at the threshold of the most sacred days of the year. The Church invites us not to be observers, but participants - to walk with Christ, to suffer with Him, to die to sin, and to rise with Him into new life.”

As the Liturgy continued, a great multitude of the faithful approached the Holy Chalice, receiving the Most Pure Body and Precious Blood of Christ. This sacred moment revealed the true meaning of the feast - not simply welcoming Christ externally, but receiving Him internally, becoming bearers of His divine life.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, a prayer service was offered before the icon of Saint Panteleimon, the patron and protector of the parish. This prayerful tradition, deeply cherished by the community, united the faithful in intercession, seeking healing of soul and body, and entrusting their lives to the mercy of God.

In his closing words, Fr. Vasyl Shak expressed heartfelt gratitude to Archbishop Daniel for his loving archpastoral presence, while also conveying the love and prayers of the parish for His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, who is currently recovering from surgery. With filial devotion, the faithful were invited to continue praying for their Primate, that the Lord may grant him strength and healing.

As a visible sign of love and unity, the parish presented Archbishop Daniel with a prosphora - a gift not only of bread, but of prayer, sacrifice, and Eucharistic life.

A joyful group photograph followed, capturing the unity, faith, and living spirit of the parish family. Soon thereafter, the traditional blessing of willows and palm branches commenced. The faithful lifted their branches high, as prayers were offered and holy water was sprinkled abundantly upon all.

Children gathered closely around the Archpastor, their eyes filled with wonder, their hearts open - witnesses to the beauty of the Church and participants in its sacred life.

Though the rain continued to fall outside, within the church there was only light - the light of Christ, the light of faith, the light of hope.

As the faithful departed, they carried with them more than blessed branches - they carried a renewed commitment to Christ, a deeper understanding of the mystery of salvation, and a readiness to walk the path of the Cross.

In his final exhortation, Archbishop Daniel left the faithful with these words: “Let us not allow this feast to pass as a moment - but let it become a transformation. Let Christ enter our hearts today, so that when we stand before the empty Tomb, we may rejoice not as strangers - but as those who have walked with Him, suffered with Him, and now rise with Him.”

With joy upon their lips and prayer within their hearts, the faithful returned to their homes - prepared to enter the solemn, sacred, and life-giving journey of the Great and Holy Week.

And beyond the Cross… they await with unwavering hope the radiant dawn of Pascha - the Feast of Feasts, the Triumph of Life over death, and the eternal victory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord!

З глибокою радістю, духовним очікуванням і серцями, піднесеними до Небесного Єрусалима, вірні Української Православної Церкви Святого Великомученика Пантелеймона в Брукліні, Нью-Йорк, зібралися у надзвичайно великій кількості, щоб відсвяткувати світле і торжественне свято Входу Господа, Бога і Спасителя нашого Ісуса Христа в Єрусалим - Вербну неділю, священний поріг, що вводить Церкву в урочисту і спасительну подорож Великого і Страсного тижня. 

З благословення Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США, Архієпископ Даниїл молитовно прибув із Духовного осередку Церкви у Саут-Бавнд-Бруку, штат Нью-Джерзі, до Брукліна, щоб очолити богослужіння цього великого свята. Його прибуття стало не просто архипастирським візитом - це була подія живої зустрічі, ікона Доброго Пастиря, який приходить до своєї пастви, щоб вести її в таїнство Страстей і Воскресіння Христового.

Попри дощ, що лагідно падав того дня на місто, понад 500 вірних зібралися у святих стінах храму та в додатковому тимчасовому приміщенні, свідчачи про живу віру Церкви - віру, яку жодна буря не може зменшити, але лише зміцнює.

Коли Архієпископ Даниїл наблизився до святого храму, його зустріли з глибокою пошаною і щирою радістю. Діти парафії, сповнені чистоти і світла, у святковому вбранні зустрічали Архіпастиря з квітами, стаючи живим образом дітей Єрусалима, які колись вигукували: «Осанна! Благословен, Хто йде в ім’я Господнє!» Їхня присутність була не лише символічною - вона була богословською, нагадуючи, що Царство Боже належить таким, як вони (Мт. 19:14).

При вході до храму давній і прекрасний звичай хліба і солі був піднесений головою парафіяльної управи п. Степаном Луцівим, як знак гостинності, любові та посвяти свого життя Христу і Його Церкві. Пані Соня, віддана парафіянка, виголосила зворушливий вірш, що поєднав теми смирення, перемоги та духовної дороги вірних. Настоятель парафії, всечесний о. Василь Шах, зустрів Архієпископа хрестом, звертаючись словами, що глибоко торкнулися сердець усіх присутніх:

«Ваше Високопреосвященство, як Христос увійшов до Єрусалима в смиренні та любові, так сьогодні ми приймаємо Вас у наш духовний дім. Ведіть нас, наставляйте і укріпляйте, щоб ми не лише устами вигукували “Осанна”, але й усім своїм життям свідчили про це - вірою, жертвою і любов’ю».

Увійшовши до храму, Архієпископ Даниїл привітав вірних святковим словом, сповненим пастирської теплоти і духовної сили: «Улюблені у Христі, сьогодні Цар Слави входить не лише до древнього Єрусалима - Він стоїть при дверях наших сердець, бажаючи увійти, перебувати і перемінити нас».

Перед початком Божественної Літургії відбулася особливо зворушлива подія - семінарист Богдан Мотичак зі Свято-Софійської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії був пострижений у читця. Визнання його посвяти літургійному життю, богословській освіті та служінню Церкві стало свідченням живої дії Святого Духа.

Під час Божественної Літургії, яка відзначалася глибокою молитвою та духовною зосередженістю, хор і вірні підносили свої голоси в гармонійній прославі Бога, а духовенство звершувало служіння з благоговінням, являючи єдність Тіла Христового.

Після читання Святого Євангелія Архієпископ Даниїл виголосив глибоку проповідь, закликаючи вірних не лише бути свідками події, але увійти в її духовний зміст:

«Вербна неділя - це не лише згадка минулого. Це сьогоднішня реальність. Христос входить у Єрусалим сьогодні. Питання в тому - чи дозволимо ми Йому увійти в Єрусалим нашої душі?»

Роздумуючи над символікою пальмових гілок, він зазначив: «Пальма не приносить плоду швидко - їй потрібні роки зростання і терпіння. Майже тридцять років - як і в житті людини, що досягає зрілості для служіння. Ті гілки, які ми тримаємо, - це знак нашої духовної зрілості, готовності прийняти Христа не лише у славі, але й на шляху до Хреста».

Архіпастир наголосив і на значенні одеж, що їх стелили перед Христом: «Люди клали перед Ним не просто одяг -вони приносили своє життя. Сьогодні ми покликані покласти перед Христом усе, що віддаляє нас від Нього -гордість, гнів, гріх - щоб Він воцарився в наших серцях».

Закликаючи до духовної пильності, він сказав: «Ми стоїмо на порозі найсвятіших днів року. Церква закликає нас не бути глядачами, але учасниками - йти з Христом, страждати з Ним і воскреснути з Ним до нового життя».

Під час Літургії численні вірні приступили до Святого Причастя, приймаючи Пречисте Тіло і Чесну Кров Христові, стаючи причасниками Божого життя.

Після завершення богослужіння було звершено молебень перед іконою святого великомученика і цілителя Пантелеймона - небесного покровителя парафії. У спільній молитві вірні просили зцілення, милості та Божого благословення.

У слові подяки о. Василь Шах висловив щиру вдячність Архієпископу Даниїлу за архіпастирську любов, а також передав молитовну підтримку Митрополиту Антонію, просячи всіх про молитви за його одужання.

На знак любові парафія піднесла Архієпископу просфору - символ молитви і євхаристійного життя. Після цього було зроблено спільне фото, яке відобразило єдність і радість парафіяльної родини.

Згодом відбулося традиційне освячення вербових і пальмових гілок. Вірні підносили їх угору, а Архіпастир окроплював святою водою. Діти знову оточили владику, радіючи участі у святині.

Хоч дощ і надалі падав над містом, у храмі панувало світло - світло Христове, світло віри, світло надії.

Повертаючись додому, вірні несли із собою не лише освячені гілки, але оновлені серця і готовність пройти шлях Великого і Страсного тижня.

І вже за Хрестом… вони з надією очікують світлого ранку Пасхи - Свята свят, торжества життя над смертю і вічної перемоги Господа нашого Ісуса Христа.
