Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA Offers Prayers Following the Police Officer Shootings in Downtown Dallas, TX

Once again, the news media confronts us with the sad reality to inhumane distraction of the most sacred God-given human life. Following the most horrific, deplorable, and senseless acts of Police shooting in Dallas, TX, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA expresses its solidarity with the people of Dallas, TX, whose residents were shaken by violence and extends heartfelt prayers to the families of those who were killed or injured as a result of the attack.

The magnitude of the violence in Dallas, TX on Thursday night is stunning. Several police officers were killed and other law enforcement officers and two civilians were wounded in a deadly gunfire at the conclusion of a peaceful march protesting recent killings of other human beings in Baton Rouge and Minneapolis.

Naturally, our first concern is for the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic attack. We pray for consolation and healing for both the families and those killed and wounded. We are reminded of the ever-present danger to those who are dedicated to protecting us, and when such violence is directed against members of law enforcement and aggravated by racial enmity, the harm to the character of our society is even more destructive and offensive.

Recently, we have been swept up in the escalating cycle of violence that has touched people throughout our country and the world. All lives matter: black and white, Christian and Muslim, etc.  We are all children of God and all human life is sacred and precious.

We cannot lose respect for each other and we call upon all of our civic leaders to speak to one another and work together to come to a sensible resolution to this escalating violence.  Let us implore God our Heavenly Father to touch the minds and hearts of all people to work together for peace and understanding.

As your archpastors, we ask all Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in our Sacred Metropolia in the United States of America and throughout the world, as well as all people of good will to join us in prayer for the repose of the officers of Dallas police department murdered and for the peace of their families and colleagues. Pray for all of those injured and wounded in these violent acts. Pray also for all members of our law enforcement communities who daily put themselves in harm’s way to serve and protect the people of our community from crime and violence.

With prayers in Christ, the Merciful Savior and Counselor of our souls,

+Antony, Metropolitan of the UOC of the USA

+Daniel, Bishop of the UOC of the USA
