UOC of the USA Reaches Out to the Refugees from Donetsk and Luhansk Regions of Ukraine

“I raise my eyes to heaven, praying for peace; I stretch my hands towards heaven, begging for stability and peace…”

These were the words of a thirteen-year-old Mariana, a refuge child from Donetsk region of Eastern Ukraine, as she greeted His Grace Bishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy and President of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA along with Very Rev. Bazyl Zawierucha (Pastor of Holy Assumption Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Northampton, PA and Academic Dean of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Bound Brook, NJ) on May 7, 2015 at LOGOS Orthodox Christian Center outside of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

Some 180 men, women and children became recipients of $30,000 collected by the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA as well the members of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America and the Ukrainian Heritage Club of Northern California that partnered with the UOC of the USA in delivering financial assistance to those in need, especially to the dislocated population of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Chanting of religious songs and sharing of the message of the Scriptures for the day – these were some of the topics for a prayerful discussion that Vladyka Daniel led while visiting the LOGOS center. Assisted by Very Rev. Mykola Ilnytsky, the founder of LOGOS, the bishop learned in detail about the latest plans and achievements of the residents of displaced community. Vladyka Daniel kindly requested and went on a personal tour of a newly established local farm, which is being cared for by the residents of LOGOS. Over 300 chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys are raised on a small farm, thus providing proper nutritional plans for the children and adults in residence.

In addition, while visiting the refuges, His Grace Bishop Daniel and Fr. Bazyl Zawierucha visited a cancer patient, who recently arrived from Donetsk and presently receives chemotherapy in the center.

Considering the latest escalation of fighting on the Eastern front of the armed conflict, the delegation of the UOC of the USA followed the advice of the local authorities and postponed the visit to the immediate villages around Debaltsevo, Maryinka, etc. However, the most recent refugees from these areas benefitted from the visit of the Church’s delegation. Each person and family received monetary support, while the children in residence were treated to ice cream, which definitely ensured a great amount of love and attention to Vladyka Daniel, who with the permission of the parents, declared the establishment of an ice cream social hour in the center.

In addition to the visit to Kyiv LOGOS Center, His Grace, escorted by Fr. Bazyl Zawierucha traveled to Lviv Military hospital in order to distribute the additional financial assistance to the wounded soldiers of Ukrainian armed forces that are going through the military medical institution in hopes of full physical, moral and spiritual recovery. In addition to the already distributed funds, over $5,000 were gifted to the wounded soldiers and their family members.

While leaving the LOGOS Center, the children followed their new friend and spiritual father- Bishop Daniel to the car, waving their “goodbyes” and inquiring about the Church’s next delegation that visit the people of various backgrounds, but united by their humanity and Faith.

To all of you, dear readers, parishioners of the UOC of the USA as well as various generous partners and contributors to the Church’s charitable funds – Thank You - for your prayers, love and very generous gifts of love.

With Prayers from the Faithful of the UOC of the USA
