The Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) has appointed Dr. William Black as an Orthodox Christian missionary to Kenya. Dr. Black’s dual assignment will include teaching missionaries at the Patriarchal Orthodox Seminary in Nairobi and serving as Senior Lecturer in History and Theology at St. Paul’s University in Nairobi, under the Omophorion of His Eminence Makarios, Archbishop of Kenya.

On Sunday, December 21, Dr. Black’s accomplishment was formally recognized by his home parish, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Charlottesville/Greenwood, VA, as the third recipient of the St. Nicholas Award. This annual award acknowledges an individual(s) who has served the Lord with distinction in charitable and missionary ministries. Dr. Black accepted the award during the annual Parish Festal Dinner at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, sharing with those present his deep desire to teach the next generation African missionaries, raised up from local Christian communities.

OCMC missionaries seek support for their work in various ways. Prior to his departure, Dr. Black has been clear in his focus in this regard – first and foremost, to have partners in prayer, both parish communities and individuals – but also in essential financial support which will ensure that the viability of this critical ministry during his time in Africa.

Through the grace of God and participation in Dr. Black’s new ministry, the Orthodox Christian Church in the United States has been given an opportunity to participate in the formation of a new generation of priests and leaders for the Church in Kenya and all Africa – who will be trained and equipped to bring the gospel to countless individuals worldwide.
