“NEBESNA SOTNYA” – 40^th Day Memorial

The Ukrainian Cultural Center at the Metropolia Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA was the site on Sunday evening 30 March (already 31 March in Kyiv, Ukraine – the actual 40^th day after repose) of an ecumenical memorial service for the “Nebesna Sotnya”.  This group name translates to the “Heavenly Hundred” and includes those heroes of Ukraine killed by snipers on the Kyiv “Maidan” on 20 February and others who fell during the months-long protests demanding human rights and dignity, as well as Ukraine’s right to self-determination regarding a closer relationship with the European Union. 

Nearly four hundred people and program participants offered heartfelt prayers for the repose of the souls of those who were willing to sacrifice their own lives by standing with hundreds of thousands of other Ukrainian citizens who stood firm in the truth of their movement and the rights of an independent Ukrainian nation. Students of the Metropolia Center Ukrainian School led a candlelight procession into the Cultural Center main hall followed by the clergy and the hierarchs.  The Panakhyda was served by Ukrainian Orthodox and Catholic hierarchs – His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch and Eastern Eparch and His Grace Bishop Daniel, President of the Consistory and Western Eparch of the UOC of USA along with His Eminence Metropolitan Stefan, Prime Hierarch and Philadelphia Eparch and His Grace Bishop Paul, Stamford Eparch of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.  Standing with the hierarchs on prayer were thirty priests and deacons.  Responses for the service were offered by the St. Andrew Memorial Church Choir under the direction of Dr. Michael Andrec.

Following the service both Metropolitans Stefan and Antony addressed the faithful gathered for the momentous occasion to pay due respect for the modern day heroes of Ukraine who join the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of other heroes and martyrs of Ukrainian history who were not afraid to die their nation and her people rather than succumb to the suppression and oppression of foreign powers and threats.

Metropolitan Stefan: "It is a privilege which we all enjoy to freely gather and to freely express our faith in God.  We can gather on these holy grounds before the altar and to pray for the souls of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of others in our native Ukraine. We can freely speak of the hardships and oppression being experienced by our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Ukraine.  We can gather as people of faith from different Churches united in prayer and in our love and appreciation of one another.  We can gather together without fear of intimidation and oppression of our loved ones at home while we raise our voices in protest for the rights and dignity of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.  Let our hearts be filled with gratitude for these freedoms we can celebrate here. Such freedoms are denied the people of Ukraine and particularly the people of Crimea.  Their human dignity is being compromised by people enforcing an authorative and oppressive ideology on Ukrainians and other Baltic nations.  Our humble desire is that people in Ukraine enjoy the same freedoms and dignities desired by all freedom loving peoples in the world.  We raise our prayers to almighty God to empower those who can make a difference in Ukrainian society to act in ways that raise the dignity of every Ukrainian citizen. We call upon the world authorities to remain steadfast in their not accepting the resolve of oppressive political leaders in dividing our mother Ukraine.  The unity and future of Ukraine ought to be determined by the people of Ukraine.

Our hearts are particularly filled with gratitude for the ultimate gift given by brave souls who sacrificed their life in the pursuit of freedoms for Ukraine.  We pray for the souls of those who were killed during the struggles at the Maidan in Kyiv.  Laying down one’s life for others has undoubtedly provided special blessings upon the souls of the departed.  We pray for their souls, for the forgiveness of their sins, and that God grant unto their souls that peace and joy which surpasses all human understanding, and is promised to all who love the Lord and serves His people with sacrifice."   

Metropolitan Antony: “By all human calculations, Ukraine should not even exist today having suffered cataclysm after cataclysm after cataclysm throughout her history during which so many millions of people perished and millions more who were never born because those who perished were unable to give them life. How can a nation continue to exist and endure if its population cannot grow through the birth of successive generations?  It is by the Grace of God that Ukraine exists.  I encourage you all to pray fervently for Ukraine,  especially to the Mother of God who has always extended her veil of protection over her people.

“I awaken each morning over the past 40 days asking myself – how can this be happening to Ukraine again?  How is it that a nation already independent for twenty years cannot be accepted as such by her neighbors?  How can those neighbors still claim to have “rights” to any part of Ukraine that have no legal or logical foundation? What is important to remember this evening as we commemorate these fallen heroes you see depicted in the photos and biographies surrounding you this evening is that they were not simply following the example of earlier martyrs for truth in Ukrainian history. They were standing firm for truth and human dignity in response to the circumstances of today – standing against those who would sell Ukraine’s independence once again to foreign invaders.

“None of them expected or wanted to die. None of them expected that their very deaths would be the catalyst for abrupt change in the life of their nation – with a corrupt “president” fleeing from what he perceived to be threats to his life, abandoning any possible claim to his presidency or legitimacy before the world community.  But, their very deaths were the last straw that changed the life of the nation instantly. Their deaths forced a corrupt government to realize that its days were over and that it could no longer squander the wealth of the nation – of the people.  Their deaths resulted in a new a completely government leadership placing very surprised members of the Verkovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) in authority.  Their deaths provoked a self-examination of the membership of the former ruling party finally bringing on the realization that they were on the wrong side of “truth”.

“What the world needs to comprehend is that, which the people of Ukraine have known for generations:  “Heroes do not die!”  (“Heroyi ne vmirayut!”)  They live on in the collective memory of the nation and give rise to future heroes who will continue to stand firm in “truth”.  We ask all of you present this evening to remember that such heroism is never wasted or useless.  It reaches not only the minds of the nation’s population but the minds of the world – in particular the czars, the commandants, “unidentified” invaders and even the presidents who refuse to accept the new world reality and want to recreate empires.   They speak to Mr. Putin saying “we will not die!” No longer will you be free to murder millions of us through starvation or by freezing us during long cold winters.  Beneath all the attempts to wipe the Ukrainian nation out of existence and off the world map, the Ukrainian self-identity has survived and always resulted in rebirth of the nation.  Heroes do not die!”

Following the Panakhyda a moving video of photographs of the memorials to the victims on the Maidan in Kyiv was shown, during which His Grace Bishop Daniel and Natalia Honcharenko read poetry composed by various authors about the heroes, about their cause and about what their deaths accomplished.  The second half of the video was accompanied by the song “You Raise Me Up” and depicted scenes of life on the Maidan during protests, the medical treatment centers, actual hospitals, which were set up in churches surrounding the Maidan and Bishop Daniel’s visits in Ternopil district to a victim in hospital injured on the Maidan and to the family of one who was killed, serving a Litiya at his grave.

The male ensemble “Domine” consisting of six young men from Ivano-Frankivsk: Fr. Yurij Mularchuk, Vitaliy Mularchuk, Jaroslav Belej, Ruslan Rolnyj, Jaroslav Tkachuk and Vasyl Smorzhanyuk next sang three spiritual hymns in memory of those lost.  They were followed by twenty-five students of the Metropolia Center of St. Andrew Ukrainian School under the direction of Halyna Marynec. The students in rotation offered brief verses commemorating and expressing gratitude to the fallen heroes and declaring that their sacrifice would not be in vain.  Domine then sang three additional hymns, the last of which – “Plyve Kacha” has been declared by the new Ukrainian government as the anthem of the Maidan and directed that when and wherever it is sung, all present should stand.

Natalia Honcharenko, acting as Master of Ceremonies for the program next introduced the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States of America, His Excellency Olexander Motsyk who expressed his deep regret and sympathy to the families and all Ukrainian people at the murder of the heroes of the Maidan.   He compared their sacrifice to other heroes such as those, mainly students, killed by the Soviet Army near the Kruty railroad station in Chernihiv in 1918. Just as these students are memorialized in the hearts and minds of Ukrainian people worldwide, so will be the heroes of the Maidan.  Speaking next was the Consul General of Ukraine in New York City, Igor Sybiga who addressed the important fact that the heroes will not be remembered as simple victims, but as those who understood that they were standing for “truth”.  Their stance will prove victorious over all other forces, which would hold power over Ukraine and her people because “truth” always prevails.

His Grace Bishop Daniel next brought those present into the emotional reality of what was lost in the heroes being commemorated world wide by reading a letter of one of the victims to his mother. 

“Мамо, знаєш, як хочеться жити,
вірив, що боремось не даремно,
не хотілося бути убитим
бездиханним упасти на землю.

Iз останніх я сил намагався,
як люблю тебе розказати,
та вони не залишили шансів,
щоб життя моє врятувати.

Ця нестерпна біль, моя ненько,
усе тіло моє пронизало,
клята куля попала в серденько,
і в очах усе світло згасало.

За країну, за честь, за свободу,
ми прийшли на Майдан відстояти,
та прийшлося простому народу
у нерівнім бою воювати.

Що покинув тебе, пробач ненько,
така в мене життєва дорога,
помолися за мене, рідненька,
бо тепер я у сотні у Бога.»

This was among the most moving moments of the evening and it led directly into the final aspect of the commemorative program – a video in stark black and white of the memorials on the Maidan with family members visiting and friends and co-protestors of the heroes carrying their coffins during funerals, again to the anthem “Plyve Kacha”.

Throughout the entire evening there was an incredible emotional commitment to what was being commemorated during the memorial service and program. It is seldom that one can actually hear a pin drop in a gathering of 400 people, but this was the case this evening. All those present were so emotionally invested in what they were there for, that no private conversations were necessary or desired.  His Grace expressed the deep appreciation of Metropolitan Antony, himself and all the program participants to all present in the Cultural Center for such an important commemoration.  He also expressed gratitude to all who participated in the program for their acts of love in remembering the “heroes who will never die”.

“Небесна Сотня” — 40-й День Панахида

В неділю 30 березня (31 березня за Українським часом — 40-й день від дня смерті “Небесної Сотні”) Український Культурний Центр, що при Митрополії Української Православної Церкви США став місцем міжконфесійної Панахиди за “Небесною Сотнею”. Це група героїв України, які були вбиті снайперами на Майдані 20 лютого, а також ті, які загинули в протестах на протязі останніх кількох місяців захищаючи права, гідність людини та право України щодо самовизначення відносно ближчих стосунків з Євросоюзом.

Близько 400 вірних та учасників програми склали щиру молитву за спочилі душі тих, хто був готовий пожертвувати своїм життям стоячи з сотнями тисяч інших громадян України, що твердо відстоювали правду та права незалежної Української нації. Учні Української Школи, що знаходиться при Центрі Митрополії, з свічками у руках вели процесію до головного залу Культурного Центру, слідом за ними йшли духовенство та ієрархи. Панахиду служили Українські Православні та Католицькі ієрархи — Його Високопреосвященство Митрополит Антоній, Первоієрарх та Владика Східньої Єпархії; Його Преосвященство Єпископ Даниїл, Президент Консисторії та Владика Західньої Єпархії Української Православної Церкви США разом з Його Високопреосвященством Митрополитом Стефаном, Первоієрархом та Владикою Єпархії у Філадельфії, та Його Преосвященством Єпископом Павлом, Стемфордської Єпархії Української Католицької Церкви. Разом з ієрархами на богослужінні були присутні 30 священиків та дияконів. Молитовним співом доповнив це богослужіння хор Церкви-Пам’ятника Св. Андрія, яким керував Доктор Михайло Андрець.

В кінці Панахиди обидва Митрополити Стефан та Антоній звернулися до вірних, які зібралися на цю важливу подію, щоб віддати належну пошану героям України теперішнього часу, які приєдналися до сотні тисяч, а то й мільйонів героїв та святих історії України, які не боялися померти за свою націю та людей і не піддатися утиску та пригніченню чужоземних лідерів.

Митрополит Степан: “Ми маємо привілей - втішатися свободою зібрань й виявів нашої віри в Бога. Ми зібралися на цій святій землі, перед вівтарем, щоб помолитися за душі тих, які принесли найвищу жертву за свободу ближніх в нашій рідній Україні. Ми можемо вільно говорити про тяготи й утиски, які пережили наші брати і сестри в Україні. Ми можемо збиратися, як віруючі люди різних віросповідань, щоб спільно молитися з любов’ю та повагою один до одного. Ми можемо збиратися разом, не боячись, що наших рідних будуть залякувати чи переслідувати за те, що ми захищаємо права і гідність наших братів і сестер в Україні. Нехай наші серця сповняться вдячністю за ті свободи, якими ми втішаємося тут. У таких свободах було відмовлено людям в Україні, а сьогодні людям в Криму. Їхній людській гідності загрожують ті, що сповідують авторитарну й гнобительську ідеологію щодо українського та балтійських народів. Ми смиренно прагнемо, щоб народ в Україні користувався такими самими свободами та повагою, як і всі свободолюбні народи в світі. Ми молимо Всевишнього Бога спонукати тих, від кого залежать зміни в українському суспільстві, діяти так, щоб піднести гідність кожного українського громадянина. Ми закликаємо світових лідерів твердо стояти на позиціях неприйняття намірів репресивних політичних лідерів розділити нашу матір Україну. Єдність та майбутнє України має вирішуватися лише українським народом.

Наші серця сповнені особливою вдячністю за безцінний дар безстрашних людей, які пожертвували свої життя в боротьбі за волю України. Ми молимося за душі тих, які були вбиті в протистоянні на Майдані в Києві. Покласти своє життя за інших, без сумніву, є особливим благословенням для душ загиблих. Ми молимося за їхні душі, за прощення їхніх гріхів, і щоб Бог дарував їм мир і радість, які перевищують будь-яке людське розуміння й обіцяне всім, хто любить Господа і жертовно служить його народу.”

Митрополит Антоній: “За усіма людськими підрахунками, Україна не повинна була б уже існувати сьогодні після усіх катаклізмів, що вона пережила впродовж своєї історії коли мільйони людей загинули і мільйони ніколи так і не народилися, тому що ті, хто загинули не змогли дати їм життя. Як може нація продовжувати існувати та терпіти коли в її суспільстві не було навіть одного покоління, яке б народилося і прожило без війни або переслідувань. Тільки з Божої Ласки Україна і досі існує. Я закликаю усіх вас щиро молитися за Україну, особливо до Матері Божої, яка під своїм омофором завжди охороняла Український народ.

На протязі останніх 40-ка днів я прокидаюся кожного ранку запитуючи себе – як таке може повторюватися з Україною знову? Як це так, нація будучи незалежною протягом 20-ти років і досі не може бути визнаною її сусідами? Як ці сусіди і досі можуть стверджувати що вони мають “права” на будь-яку частину України яка не має легальних основ? Важливим, цього вечора коли ми згадуємо загиблих героїв яких ви можете бачити на портретах навколо вас з короткою біографією кожного з них, є те, що вони не просто слідували прикладу попередніх мучеників за правду яких ми знаємо з історії України. Вони відстоювали тверду правду та людську гідність у відповідь на сьогоденні обставини – виступаючи проти тих, хто готовий вкотре продати незалежність України чужоземним загарбникам.

Ніхто з них не чекав чи хотів загинути. Ніхто з них не сподівався що їхня смерть стане причиною різких змін у житті їхньої нації – з корупційним “президентом”, який втікаючи, як він вбачав від загрози його життю, покинув будь-яке відношення щодо його президенства чи легітимності перед світовою громадою. Смерть “Небесної Сотні” стала останньою краплею терпіння, яка різко змінила життя нації. Їхня смерть заставила корупційну владу усвідомити що прийшов кінець їхньому пануванню та марнотратству майна нації – людей. Їхня смерть повністю змінила лідерів уряду, призначивши до влади нових членів Верховної Ради. Їхня смерть заставила усвідомити колишніх членів керуючої партії те, що вони були на поганій стороні “правди”.

Світ повинен зрозуміти те, що народ України на протязі поколінь пам’ятає що: “Герої не вмирають!” Вони продовжують жити в пам’яті нації та бути прикладом для майбутніх героїв які продовжать відстоювати правду. Ми просимо вас усіх тут присутніх цього вечора пам’ятати що цей героїзм ніколи не буде даремним або таким, що не приносить ніякої користі. Він досягає до свідомості не тільки нашої нації, а й до цілого світу – в тому числі до царів, командирів, “незнаних” загарбників та навіть президентів, які відмовляються визнати нову реальність та продовжують відтворити імперії. Ці загиблі герої звертаються до пана Путіна “Ми ніколи не помремо!” Ніхто більше не зможе катувати, мучити голодом чи морозом у холодну зиму мільйони нас. Не зважаючи на усі спроби стерти Україну з лиця землі, українська самоідентичність зберіглася аж до сьогоднішнього дня, вона завжди була поштовхом для відродження нації. Герої не вмирають.”

Після закінчення Панахиди, зворушливі відео та фотографії в пам’ять загиблим на Майдані в Києві були показані на великому екрані. В той самий час, Його Преосвященство Владика Даниїл та пані Наталя Гончаренко читали вірші написані різними поетами про загиблих героїв, причину їхньої смерті та чого вони досягнули. Другою половиною відео було поєднання пісні “You Raise Me Up” та фотографій з життя Майдану під час протестів, медичні пункти які були розставлені в церквах та на вулицях навколо Майдану, лікарні та візит Владики Даниїла на Тернопільщину де в лікарні він відвідав пораненого, який вернулися з Майдану та сім’ю вбитого на Майдані, за яким Владика відслужив Заупокійну Літію на його могилі.

Чоловічий ансамбль “Доміне” з Івано-Франківська, який складається з шести членів: о. Юрій Мулярчук, Віталій Мулярчук, Василь Сморжанюк, Ярослав Белей, Ярослав Ткачук та Руслан Рольний виконали три духовні твори в пам’ять загинулим. Після них, під наглядом директорки Школи Українознавства, що знаходиться при Центрі Митрополії пані Галини Маринець, 25 учнів розказали вірші в яких вони згадували загиблих героїв, дякували їм та обіцяли що пам’ять про них буде жити вічно. Тоді, ансамбль “Доміне” виконали ще три додаткові пісні, останньою з них була – “Пливе Кача”, яку новий уряд України проголосив гімном Майдану та постановив що кожного разу коли ця пісня буде звучатиме усі повинні стояти.

Ведуча програми пані Наталя Гончаренко представила Надзвичайно Повноважного Посла України до Сполучених Штатів Америки, Його Екселенцію Олександра Моцика, який висловив свої щирі співчуття родинам загинутих та усьому Українському народу. Він прирівняв “Небесну Сотню” до героїв, в більшості студентів вбитих Радянською Армією під Крутами в Чернігові у 1918 році. “Так само як пам’ять про цих героїв увіковічнилася у нашій пам’яті, герої Майдану не будуть забуті також” – сказав Посол. Наступним до слова був запрошений Генеральний Консул України в Нью-Йорку, пан Ігор Сибіда, який наголосив на тому що ці герої не запам’ятаються нам як просто потерпілі, але як ті, хто розуміли що вони відстоювали “правду”. Їхня позиція буде доказана перемогою над ворожими силами, які ніколи не будуть панувати над Україною та її народом, тому що “правда” переможе.

Зачитуючи лист одного з потерпілих на Майдані до своєї мами, Владика Даниїл заставив усіх присутніх вкотре задуматися над жертвою героїв, пам’ять про яких того дня була вшанована по цілому світі.

Це був один з найбільш зворушуючих моментів вечора. Поминальну програму закінчило чорно-біле відео з сюжетами того, як друзі, рідні, учасники протестів та просто не байдужі люди провадили в останню дорогу в домовинах героїв Майдану під гімн “Пливе Кача”.

Під час цілого вечора можна було спостерігати надзвичайно емоційну присвяту до Панахиди та програми. Рідко коли в присутності 400 людей можна почути як у когось упала копійка на підлогу, що в дійсності сталося того вечора. Усі присутні були настільки емоційно присвячені цій події, що ні в кого не було бажання а то і думки говорити один з одним. Його Преосвященство Владика Даниїл висловив подяку Митрополиту Антонію, усім присутнім у Культурному Центрі, та особливо усім учасникам програми за їхній вияв любові до “героїв які ніколи не вмирають”.
