PALM - WILLOW SUNDAY AT ST. PANTELEIMON PARISH, BROOKLYN, NY

In the life of the Holy Church, a tradition consists of any event or practice that occurs regularly in a diocese or even a local parish and has become expectation in the lives of the faithful.   Such a tradition begins with a small “t” as opposed to Holy Tradition (capital “T”), which is equal to Holy Scripture – the teachings and dogmas handed down throughout the life of Christ’s Church.  A tradition has developed in St. Panteleimon Parish, Brooklyn, NY according to which Metropolitan Antony annually visits the parish to bless the willow branches in commemoration of our Lord’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem when the population of the city greeted Him – mistakenly, of course as an earthly king – crying out “Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel”!

Our Holy Church’s commemoration of this event is quite different, of course.  We greet our Lord as the Son of God Whose Kingdom is not of this world.  We see this event as the prelude to Holy Week and we glorify Him as the one who was willing to undergo humiliation, torture, suffering on the Cross and death in order to open the way for us to salvation through His Resurrection, having trample down death by death.  We witnessed the day before as He stood before the tomb of His friend Lazarus and we heard the shortest verse in Scripture: “Jesus wept.”  Those present around Him though our Lord was weeping because He loved His friend so much.  Our Lord, however, wept because of the state of God’s creative masterpiece – man – in the grave and stinking.  He also wept because He knew the power of God’s Love and the deeds it would work at this present moment and through His Resurrection!  This is the King we greet as we wave our will branches as we commemorate His entrance into the Holy City.

Such was the commemoration on Willow Sunday of 2013.  Over seven hundred faithful Orthodox Christians gathered within and without the parish church locate on Avenue P in Brooklyn to join in the joyful celebration.  V. Rev. Mykola Fylyk, pastor of the parish greeted His Eminence at the entrance to the Church, asking for his blessings upon and prayers for the faithful gathered in Christ’s Name.  Also greeting the Metropolitan in behalf of the parish board of administration and the faithful were Sonia Roshnivka and Olexander  Boykovych.  It was a beautiful Divine Liturgy with the choir led by Petro Karabijnevych. Accompanying His Eminence from our St. Sophia Seminary were Fr. Vasyl Dmytryshyn, Subdeacons Ioan Mazur, IvanChopko, Yurij Andreiko, and seminarians Volodymyr Sukanetsand Volodymyr Yavorskyi.  They were assisted in the altar by two local servers Vasyl and Roman.

It was an incredible sight to see the numbers of faithful filling the church to absolute capacity – seated and standing and spilling into the vestibule and out to the steps and sidewalks in front of the Church.  The lines for confession were so long that Fr. Vasyl was able to stand at the altar only during the moments he participated in the Holy Eucharist.  Joining him in hearing confessions, having arrived following services at All Saints Parish, were V. Rev. Andrei Kulyk, pastor of All Saints Parish in Manhattan and V. Rev. Ivan Dufeniuk.  Confessions continued throughout the reception of the Eucharist by the faithful, but in the end, everyone who wished to participate, indeed, had the opportunity to do so.  What a wonderful “problem” to have as we enter into Holy Week!

The Metropolitan spoke of the difference between our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem in a real physical presence and compared it to our commemoration in 2013.  He warned the faithful about holding up willow branches and glorifying God today and then through our sinful words, deeds and thoughts joining those who cried out “Crucify Him!” on Holy Friday.  He reminded the worshippers that the only time Jesus Christ ever expressed any form of frustration and dissatisfaction was when he was confronted with hypocrisy – and that they must be careful about such in their lives.  “If you are here today to receive the blessed willow branches just to take them home and hang them over a seldom utilized icon just to show family and friends that you were in Church this one Sunday, but you fail to pray and worship our Lord on a regular weekly basis in your parish community and fail to receive His Body and Blood in the Eucharist frequently…your hypocrisy will be exposed and the resulting consequences will be yours to bear – with no one else to blame but yourself.”

Following the Liturgy and blessing of willow branches, the faithful lingered to speak with His Eminence Metropolitan Antony before returning to their homes to prepare for the Holy Week services and for the Feast of Feasts – the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Along with members of the parish board and those serving in the Holy Altar during Divine Liturgy, His Eminence visited a local Ukrainian owned restaurant in Brighton Beach – a large community on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, which is home to thousands of fourth wave immigrants from Ukraine and other East European nations.  Even as large as the attendance was on this Willow Sunday, it pales when compared to the Holy Resurrection services when nearly 3,000 have participated in the ten years of the parish’s existence!
