27th Anniversary of Chornobyl Nuclear Explosion Remembered at the Metropolia Center of the UOC of the USA!

About one hundred faithful of Ukrainian Orthodox parish communities of NY/NJ Metropolitan area gathered at St. Andrew the First-Called Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church on April 25, 2013 to pray for the victims of Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster that happened exactly to a minute (6:23AM) on August 26, 1986. The timing of this prayer service was crucial, as the time difference between Ukraine and Chicago is 7 hours. While the bells of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church struck in South Bound Brook, NJ 27 times in the evening hours on Thursday, April 25th, it was exactly 1:23am in Ukraine on August 26 – the time of the 27-year old explosion.

His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, the First Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and His Grace Bishop Daniel the Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy and President of the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA led the Memorial prayer service with clergy of NY/NJ/CT/PA/NM areas of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

The Consul General of Ukraine in New York City, Honorable Ihor Sybiha, escorted by Vice-Consul Kostyantyn Vorona, as well as numerous representatives of Ukrainian community organizations joined the faithful for the memorial service. Mr. Sybiha addressed the congregation on behalf of the Diplomatic Mission of Ukraine, reflecting upon the lessons that must be learned for the tragedies such as Chornobyl’s.

At the beginning of the Memorial service, Metropolitan Antony and Bishop Daniel, addressing the congregation made references to the world’s worst nuclear tragedy, while making references to the tragedy of Ukrainian people in Chornobyl and sharing Vladyka Daniel’s memories of the very first days following the Nuclear Explosion, as he was in Kyiv just a few days passed the tragedy occurring only 50km away from the capitol of Ukraine in 1986.

The choir of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church, under the prayerful and skillful direction of Michael Andrec led the chanting of the Memorial service for the victims of Chornobyl Nuclear tragedy.

Following the prayer service, the entire congregation processed to the designated site of the Metropolia Center’s grounds for a moment of prayer for the surviving witnesses of the Nuclear Disaster, while planting two red maple trees in memory of the lost and the surviving victims of Chornobyl Nuclear Catastrophe.

Following the liturgical services of the evening hours, the faithful gathered at the social hall of St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox community for a presentation of Alexa Milanych of CCRDF (Children of Chornobyl Relief and Development Fund), who shared with the community the impact that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA made on the development of daily care of the smallest victims of Chornobyl disaster – handicapped orphans of Ukraine. In conclusion of the formal program, the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA sponsored a screening of a documentary “Battle of Chornobyl” and a small supper for those in attendance.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Bishop Daniel offered words of gratitude to the staff of the Consistory of the Church for their assistance with the organizational efforts of this year’s Memorial observance and presented those in attendance with the icon of “Chornobyl Savior”, which was commissioned and written by the monastics of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

By Rev. Fr. Vasyl and Dobrodijka Ilona Dovgan
