Metropolitan Antony Visits St. Andrew Parish in Boston, MA
Visit of Metropolitan Antony to St. Andrew Parish of Boston

His Eminence, Metropolitan Antony visited St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Boston on March 31, 2013, the second Sunday of Great Lent. He was welcomed with flowers by the children of the Parish and then was greeted with bread and salt by Jane Yavarow, Parish President. Next, Very Reverend Fr. Roman Tarnavsky extended the cross to His Eminence.

Before the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, altar server Kenneth Kulmatycki was ordained as a subdeacon. Metropolitan Antony reminded Ken that in this position it is his responsibility to prepare and truly understand the Sunday Epistle he reads to the congregation.

The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was that of St. Basil the Great. Serving along with the Metropolitan and Fr. Roman was visiting priest, Rev. Fr. Anthony Perkins from St. Michael’s in Woonsocket. Assisting them on the altar were Hierodeacon Vasyl of St. Andrew’s, Deacon Vasyl Pasakas who traveled with the Metropolitan as well as Subdeacon Ioan Mazur and Seminarian Volodymyr Yavorsky and the altar boys.

In his sermon, his Eminence encouraged the faithful during Great Lent to open themselves up to reading the bible daily and to taking advantage of the numerous books on Orthodox spirituality that are available in order to better understand their need for a relationship with God.

At the conclusion of the service, the Metropolitan thanked the parishioners of St. Andrew’s and especially commented on the beautiful responses rendered by the choir under the direction of Jane Yavarow. He reminded the parish to be ever thankful for their dedication, since unfortunately, many churches no longer have active choirs.

After the Divine Liturgy everyone was invited to the church hall to enjoy a Lenten Luncheon organized by the hard working members of St. Olha’s Sisterhood. Many people labored in the kitchen to prepare a delicious meal in honor of the Metropolitan’s visit.

St. Andrew’s is undergoing an extensive renovation, restoring the dome and painting the interior. It was a little unnerving to have our Hierarch visit us and serve amidst the scaffolding towering up over 60 feet into the dome, but just as the physical needs of the church need to be addressed, it was wonderful to have His Eminence come to help us repair and restore our souls and spirits during Great Lent.
