His Grace Bishop Daniel Visits Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, IL for the Cathedral’s Patron Feast Day!

On the weekend of July 21-22, 2012, His Grace Bishop Daniel, the Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA visited the his cathedral in Chicago, IL for the feast day of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Great Prince Volodymyr.  Even though the feast of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr is celebrated on July 28th; the celebration took place a week before in order to facilitate the participation of the youth, clergy, laity and the hierarchs of the Church in the 65th Annual Ukrainian Orthodox League Convention that took place in Allentown, PA on July 26-29, 2012. Following the Vigil on Saturday evening, July 21st, a Memorial Service was served in memory of the founding fathers and mothers, as well as hierarchs and clergy of blessed memory and in remembrance of all Ukrainian Orthodox Christians who had reposed throughout the years, away from their homeland. His Grace Bishop Daniel prayed at the service.

The next morning Bishop Daniel was greeted by the cathedral’s president of the Parish Board of Adminsitration, Mrs. Raisa Bratkiw, as well as the president of St. Olha Sistrhood Mrs. Nadiya Brushenko, with the traditional bread and salt.  As is the parish’s custom, several of the children presented the hierarch with beautiful flowers of love, which bishop immediately shared with the youth of the cathedral community. The pastor of the cathedral Archimandrite Pankratiy welcomed the bishop to his eparchial cathedral and asked for an Archpastoral blessing and prayers.

Since Vladyka Daniel was already vested in sacred vestments, the Divine Liturgy followed the formal greeting. Concelebrating with His Grace were Archimadrite Pankratiy, Very Rev. Fr. Andriy Shelvakh, Protodeacon Andriy Frochak and Deacon John Charest (Sts Peter and Paul UOC in Palos Park, IL). Later in the day, the pastors of the local communities joined the clergy of the cathedral in festive celebrations; among them were Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Kalynyuk of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Bensenville, IL and Dean of Chicago Deanery, as well as Rev. Fr. Vasyl Sendeha of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Palos Park, IL.

Following the Divine Liturgy, at which many of the faithful partook of Holy Communion, Bishop Daniel greeted his cathedral community and formally informed that with the blessing of Metropolitan Constantine (who reposed in the Lord since) Rt. Rev. Archimadrite Pankratiy has been elected as an assistant bishop of the Holy Orthodox Metropolia of Mexico, in order to provide spiritual nourishment to thousands of Ukrainians and other people of Slavic background who immigrated to Mexico, Cuba, and other countries of Central America. Vladyka Daniel offered words of gratitude to the bishop-elect for the years of service at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, IL and wished him fruitful ministry among the faithful of the flock, which he is called to serve.

Moreover, Bishop Daniel also congratulated Very Rev. Fr. Andriy Shelvakh and Protodeacon Andriy Fronchak on their birthdays as well as Archimandrite Pankratiy with his name’s day and once again thanked him for his diligent service and his willingness to serve whenever needed. The catehdral’s Brotherhood and Sisterhood presented their outgoing pastor with flowers. His Grace Bishop Daniel also wished all those in the parish celebrating their name’s days many years.  After this, the choir intoned “Many Years” for the parish’s parishioners named after the thier  patron saints, as well as to their hierarch.

Following the Divine Service on this day the cathedral presented a festive meal in honor of their bishop and the cathedral’s Feast Day. During the formal luncheon, the children of the cathedral’s school of Ukrainian Language and Religion presented a moving and enjoyable concert.

The parish’s choir, under the skilful leadership of Maestro Volodymyr Popowych, had prepared particularly diligently for this hierarchal visit and the singing of the Divine Liturgy was especially moving, with choir members’ whose families came in different waves of immigration to the United States of America, in particular to Mid West – Chicago area.

The day concluded with prayer and parishioners remained in the cathedral’s social hall for hours sharing in each others company, already looking forward to the next year’s celebrations.
