PRESS RELEASE

THE SPIRITUAL FIRST DAYS OF GREAT LENT AT ST. VLADIMIR UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL IN PARMA, OHIO WITH HIS GRACE BISHOP DANIEL
By Father Michael Hontaruk, Assistant Pastor

This year, Great Lent began on March 7th and for Orthodox Christians, fasting is a time to control our bodies, our desires and our selfishness.  It allows us to get closer to God and to communicate with Him.  Ultimately, these seven weeks prepare us for the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ – the Pascha of Our Lord.

St. Vladimir Cathedral was honored to have His Grace Bishop Daniel visit the Parma parish.  Immediately upon his arrival at Cleveland Hopkins Airport on Thursday, March 10th, Bishop Daniel served the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete at St. Vladimir, where he and pastor, Fr. John Nakonachny, prayed together with the parishioners of the Cathedral.  A combined Ukrainian and English choir, under the direction of Markian Komichak, sang the responses.

On Saturday, March 12th, Bishop Daniel served a Moleben in the Cathedral.  He and the clergy of St. Vladimir prayed together with the children, teachers and director of the Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies.  The Ukrainian School children beautifully sang the responses to the Moleben.  His Grace was greeted and presented with flowers by Julia Hontaruk and Sofia Kryvorychenko.  Following the Moleben, Bishop Daniel visited the pre-school and kindergarten classrooms, speaking with the students who did not attend the service in church.

In the evening, Vespers was served, at which Bishop Daniel was present.  After the service ended, His Grace spoke to the faithful present about Rev. John Mironko, of blessed memory, on the 3rd anniversary of his falling asleep in the Lord, and asked those in attendance to join him in praying for his soul during a Panachyda.

The journey of the first week of Great Lent continued in Parma with His Grace Bishop Daniel.  On the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, Bishop Daniel served the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great in St. Vladimir Cathedral.

That same evening, the Cathedral hosted the Triumph of Orthodoxy.  Orthodox clergy and faithful of the greater Cleveland area gathered at St. Vladimir’s to honor the return of Icons to the Orthodox church.  Prior to the beginning of the service, His Grace Bishop Daniel called upon those in attendance to remember in their prayers Metropolitan Nicholas of blessed memory of Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Archdiocese of America, who reposed in the Lord earlier that day. Evening worship was led by the president of the Orthodox Clergy Association, Fr. Stephen Callos of the Greek Orthodox Church of Sts. Constantine and Helen.  His Grace was the guest speaker for the service and his words were very thought provoking and inspiring.  Markian Komichak directed the choir, which consisted of singers from different Orthodox parishes.   There were approximately 400 faithful in attendance and they were hosted to a Lenten reception in the parish center following the service, where they had the opportunity to meet and speak with Bishop Daniel.

The Sunday of Orthodoxy was established in the 9th century.  It commemorates the final victory over iconoclasm, as well as the memory of all those great Fathers and Doctors of the Church – theologians, hierarchs, priests, monks and lay-people – who dedicated their lives to the fight for the right to use icons in Church.  For all those saintly people who dedicated their lives for the protection of that doctrine, the faithful and clergy sang “Memory Eternal”.

Bishop Daniel left Cleveland on Monday, March 14th.  He will continue to travel to parishes of our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church, not only in America, but around the world.  May Our Loving Lord give him strength and inspiration to spread the word of God to all mankind.

Especially during this holy time of Great Lent,  we should all take these words to heart and work to become better people and to let Christ’s love shine through us.  In the words of St. Basil the Great, “Fasting is always helpful for someone who accepts it with joy.”  May Our Lord give us strength and purpose as we continue our Fast.
